BOSTON -- Junior
Cody Pierce and first-year
Gavin Schmidt each broke program records as the Amherst College men's track and field team competed at Middlebury's Small College Invitational hosted at the TRACK at new balance on Sunday.
Pierce established a new record in the 200m while Schmidt broke the school record in the shot put.
Amherst will resume competition on Friday, February 7 at 3 p.m. and Saturday, February 8 at 10 a.m. the Tufts Cupid Challenge.
MEET HIGHLIGHTS:
* Competing in the fastest of 15 heats, Pierce set a new Amherst school record in the 200m registering a time of 21.75 to finish second overall with a time that ranks among the top 15 in Division III this season. Pierce broke the record of 21.93 set by Henry Buren '22 that was set in 2020.
* Schmidt broke a 42-year old Amherst program record in the shot put, throwing a mark of 15.27m to break the record of 15.09m set by Dana King '83 in 1983 and finish second in the event.
* Junior
Ben Davis won the 800m by almost four seconds, crossing the line with a winning time and personal record of 1:51.49 that currently ranks third in Division III this season.
* After leading the race for 2600m, senior
Nick Edwards-Levin finished third in the 3000m recording a personal best of 8:27.39.
* First-year
Ben Kasen placed fifth overall in the 5000m clocking in a time of 15:46.71 and finishing as the top rookie in the field.
* First-year
Keason Ky won the fourth heat of the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.77 seconds before finishing fourth in the 60m hurdle finals recording a personal best and New England Division III Championship qualifying time of 8.55 seconds.
* The 4x400m relay team of
Jai Dreher, Pierce,
Kean Tanyi-Tang, and Davis won the relay out of 16 teams in 3:19.79.
* Sophomore
Alec Kuzyk placed fifth in the pole vault, delivering a personal record of 4.60m.
* In the triple jump, sophomore
Michael Abbey Jr. placed second overall jumping a distance of 14.25m while first-year
Matt Kasper placed fifth jumping 13.47m, both setting New England qualifying marks.
* Junior
Charlie Spurrell finished third in the weight throw recording a mark of 15.76m.
