#3 Mammoths edged by Cardinals, 2-1

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. With an early first-period goal by Wesleyan College's Caroline Mezias and a late second-period goal by Dylan Green, the Cardinals held off the No. 3 ranked Amherst College women's hockey team by a final score of 2-1 at Snyder Rink this evening.

Amherst's one goal was credited to junior Gretchen Dann for her fifth of the season.

The Mammoth's record falls to 11-3-1 overall and 4-2-1 for in-conference play.

Tomorrow (Jan. 25), the Mammoths will have a 3 p.m. rematch against the Wesleyan College Cardinals for another in-conference face-off at Snyder Rink.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • At 5:03 into the first period, Cardinal Mezias intercepted the puck in Wesleyan's end and fought her way up the left side of the ice by the boards against the Amherst defense. Mezias fired a high-slot shot to get Wesleyan on the scoreboard.
  • With 12:09 left in the second period, Amherst's Cara Mancini pressured Wesleyan's defense at center ice, stealing the puck and setting up Annabel Raffin for a breakaway. Raffin fired a shot on net, but Wesleyan goaltender Jenna Guglielmi made the save.
  • After a face-off in Wesleyan's end, Cardinal Amelia Molin cleared the puck up to Green at center ice. Green one-timed the puck to Cameron Devenney, who maintained possession up the ice and passed back to Green, stationed in the low slot, for the finishing touch into goal at 14:54 in the second period.
  • After Mammoth Clare O'Connor dumped the puck behind Wesleyan's net, Dann collected it at the left point, skated into the slot on her backhand, and flicked it in at 9:12 of the third period, cutting the deficit to one.
  • Wesleyan's Carly Ward lifted the puck into Amherst's zone, setting up Christina Tournas for a breakaway toward the right face-off circle. Tournas fired a shot, but Mammoth goaltender Natalie Stott made the kick save with 3:54 remaining, halting the Cardinals' momentum.
