Wesleyan nabs victory over Mammoths in OT, 70-65

Box Score MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Amherst College women's basketball team fell to Wesleyan University, 70-65, in overtime despite a double-double from Maya Cwalina and double-digit scoring from Annie McCarthy, Elizabeth Cain, and Laura Mendell

The Mammoths (11-4, 1-2) will face rival Williams College in a home game at the LeFrak Gymnasium on Wednesday at 7 p.m. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: 

* Macie Nugent shot a jumper, and Laura Mendell scored a driving layup in the final two minutes and 17 seconds of quarter four to tie the game 55-55. These decisive points would secure four minutes of overtime for the Mammoths that would provide a chance of victory.  

* Wesleyan and Amherst went back and forth in terms of score in quarter one, with the Mammoths at a three-point disadvantage, 14-17, at the close of the quarter. The Cardinals increased their lead to 19-25 halfway through the second quarter before the Mammoths began a nine-point run following a layup from Cwalina, a floating jump shot and free throw from Mendell, and a three-pointer and a free throw from Kori Barach to push the Mammoths ahead of Wesleyan by two points. The Mammoths entered halftime with a two-point lead, 30-28. 

* Amherst retained the lead until a free throw from Wesleyan's Tori DaCosta tied the game 36-36. The Mammoths responded with a three-pointer and jumper from McCarthy and a jumper from Cwalina to elevate the score to 43-36, Amherst. Wesleyan retook the lead in the final three and a half minutes with a string of successful shots. The score sat at 43-45 at the end of quarter three.

* Amherst battled back to tie the score following a floating jump shot and driving layup from Mendell and a pull up from Cwalina. Wesleyan retook the lead and maintained it until the final two minutes and 17 seconds of the game when Amherst rallied with Mendell and Nugent's pivotal points. 

* Wesleyan got a jump on the Mammoths in overtime and although the Mammoths were able to significantly narrow the scoring margin in the final 20 seconds, the Cardinals ran away with the win. 

BY THE NUMBERS: 

* Cwalina earned a double-double with 10 rebounds and 10 blocks. 

* The game was tied 8 times with 3 lead changes.
