#3 Mammoths earn tie with No. 1 Middlebury; fall in shootout

MIDDLEBURY, VT. In a game played as advertised, No 1 Middlebury and the No. 3 ranked Amherst College women's hockey team played to a 1-1- tie Friday night at Chip Keynon Arena.

The Panthers collected the shootout win, 2-1. 

Avery McInerny's early first period goal for Middlebury, followed by Anna Baxter's for Amherst tied the two teams in regulation. 

The Mammoths (10-1-1, 4-0-1) will face Middlebury (11-1-1, 5-1-1) at 3 p.m. tomorrow for the rematch. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS 
  • The home team took a 1-0 lead when Middlebury's Kate Flynn sent a pass to teammate Raina Schluter, stationed at the center of the Mammoth's blue line. Schluter then dished the puck off to McInerny in the high slot for the shot and goal at 8:30 in the first period. 
  • After controlling the face-off with 6:28 remaining in the first period, Baxter picked up the puck from behind the Panther's net and sent it to Kelsey Stewart at the right point. Stewart fired a shot at net for Ayla Abban to control it and slip it back to Baxter in the slot for the goal. 

BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Amherst outshot Middlebury 36-27. 
  • The Mammoths went 0-2 on power plays, whereas the Panthers went 0-1. 
  • Middlebury held the advantage in face-offs, winning 37 of the 66. 
  • In goal, Natalie Stott saved 26 of the 27 shots she faced in regulation.
