Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#2 Amherst wins first NESCAC match of the year versus #8 Conn, 1-0

AMHERST, MA — After winning their first match of the season in midweek, the #2 Amherst College men's soccer team followed up with its first NESCAC win of the season on Saturday. On their home turf, the Mammoths beat the #8 Connecticut College Camels with a score of 1-0 on Hitchcock Field.

The win was th 250th of head coach Justin Serpone's illustrious career.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The home team dominated the attacking play, showing early promise in what was a tightly contested first half between two top-10 teams. Amherst pushed hard for a breakthrough, firing off six shots, with four coming in the first 10 minutes. In contrast, Conn failed to generate any goal attempts. Despite Amherst's pressure, both sides remained scoreless due to solid defensive efforts across the field, keeping the game evenly poised.
  • The first and only goal of the game arrived 10 minutes into the second half, in favor of the Mammoths. Amherst emerged from the halftime break with renewed energy and put continual attacking pressure on Conn. Their persistence led to the opening goal. After finding a way behind Conn's line of defense, senior Aidan Curtis set up sophomore Mo Nuhu to score with a delightful cross across the box. Nuhu made no mistake as he powered the ball past the goalkeeper from the left side of the field to score his first goal of the season.
  • In the lead, Amherst continued to press the Conn defense in search of a second goal. Senior Niall Murphy came close at one point, when his first-time shot was pushed over the crossbar by the Camel goalkeeper. After 90 minutes, however, Amherst came away with a deserved win separated by just one goal.

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Nuhu and Curtis appear to be in fine form; each player now has two assists and a goal in two games.
  • Amherst had 13 shots (5 on goal); Conn only had 2 shots (2 on goal).
UP NEXT:
  • Amherst now holds a 2-0-0 overall record (1-0-0 versus NESCAC opposition).
  • Up next: the Mammoths will take on another NESCAC team next Saturday. They will play their rivals, the Williams College Ephs, on Cole Field in Williamstown, MA at 12pm.
QUOTES:
  • In his post-match interview, Coach Serpone said:
  • "At this point, Conn College is a program that has a chance to win a National Championship every year. We needed to be on point on every single play in that game to come away with three points.
  • I thought our pressure was pretty solid. They are one of the best ball playing teams in the country so we tried to pressure every moment. A giant part of that was Niall Murphy. He was amazing today.
  • We'll enjoy this one for a few days and then start thinking about another crazy hard game next Saturday. Williams, at Williams. What a league."
