Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#1 Amherst suffers first loss of the season at Williams, 1-0

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA — After beating the Connecticut College Camels and the Suffolk University Rams last week to start the season strongly, the #1 Amherst College men's soccer team's next challenge was the Williams College Ephs. On Cole Field, the Ephs came away with a closely-fought 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon.

The loss was the Mammoths first at Cole Field since October 29, 2005, a span of nine games (5-0-4).

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The passion that you would expect from this rivalry match was apparent throughout the first half with 12 fouls in the 45 minutes, including one that led to a yellow card for Williams' Sam Gibson. Amherst looked the most promising team with Senior Jonny Novak testing the Ephs' goalkeeper in the first five minutes and First-year Michael Cherico's header sailing inches too high for the goal. Amherst's goalkeeper, Junior Juan Perez, was called into action in the ninth minute, saving one of the home side's two shots in the half. Cherico then headed it on target ten minutes before halftime, before Senior Ryan Gomez further tested the Williams goalkeeper. The entertaining half ended 0-0.
  • The second half began in a similar fashion to the first half with end-to-end soccer but with both teams' defenses remaining strong. It took until 73 minutes for the first and only goal of the game to come, and it came in Williams' favor. Ephs attacker Alex Bethencourt found the ball come to his feet from the air in the final third. Bethencourt capitalized on the opportunity by sprinting down the left wing and zipping a dangerous cross into Lorcan Mitchell whose shot beat Amherst's Perez in goal.
  • While the Mammoths pushed for an equalizer, various blocks and diving saves kept Williams in the lead for the last 17 minutes for their first home win versus Amherst since 2005.
BY THE NUMBERS:
  • The away side had 11 corner kicks; Williams had 4.
  • Amherst had 20 shots (7 on goal); Williams had 6 (4 on goal).
UP NEXT:
  • Amherst now holds a 2-1-0 overall record (1-1-0 versus NESCAC opposition).
  • Up next: the Mammoths' next game will be a midweek, non-conference away game. On Tuesday evening at 7pm, Amherst will face the #12 Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Engineers at Alumni Stadium in Worcester, MA.
QUOTES - Amherst Head Coach, Justin Serpone:
  • "The stats don't show it but I thought Williams out-competed us today. If you get out-competed in a NESCAC game you're going to lose.
  • We're at WPI on Tuesday night playing a team that is 5-1 and ranked highly. We can't feel sorry for ourselves. We need to dig in and find a way to do a better job all around.
  • Usually, I try and single out a player in our team that had an outstanding game but I'd actually like to shout out Ben Diffley who was great in goal for Williams today. He made one outstanding save, among others, in the last ten minutes or so that got them the three points."
