Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Trott and Valadez Bush score as Amherst bounce back with 2-0 away win over #22 WPI

WORCESTER, MA — On Tuesday evening, the Amherst College men's soccer team traveled to Worcester, MA for a midweek game versus the #22 Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Engineers under the lights on the H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium. The Mammoths won 2-0.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Amherst, the away side, began the game on the front foot. Just 27 seconds in, First-year Michael Cherico tested WPI goalkeeper, Julian Quaresima, with a header on target, forcing an early save.
  • WPI tried to disrupt Amherst's rhythm with three successive fouls, but the Mammoths continued to press. In the 18th minute, senior Niall Murphy came close to breaking the deadlock, rattling the crossbar with a powerful effort. Mohammed Nuhu also threatened with a blocked shot followed by another that went wide.
  • It took WPI 30 minutes to register their first shot, challenging Amherst's first-year goalkeeper Trey Sheppard, to make a save in his second game. At the other end, Amherst Senior Aidan Curtis tried his luck, but the score remained goalless at half time.
  • Seven minutes into the second half, Amherst earned the lead they deserved. A failed clearance by WPI fell to junior Adrian Trott inside the 18-yard box. Trott calmly struck across the goal, netting his first goal of the season and putting Amherst ahead 1-0.
  • Despite sustained pressure from Amherst, the scoreline remained 1-0 for much of the second half. In the 79th minute, WPI, boasting a pre-match record of 5-1, demonstrated their aerial prowess with three consecutive headers that nearly found the equalizer.
  • In the 82nd minute, Amherst doubled their lead, which appeared to seal the win. From a left-side corner kick, Sophomore Mohammed Nuhu passed to First-year Jacob Dinzeo. Capitalizing on WPI's zonal defensive setup with ten players into the six-yard box, Dinzeo was wide open at the top of the box and crossed it in. With an athletic jump, Valadez Bush glanced the ball into the back of the net with his shoulder.
BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Amherst and WPI were even on corner kicks and fouls, with 4 and 13, respectively.
  • Amherst had 16 shots (9 on goal); WPI had 8 (3 on goal).
UP NEXT:
