#14 Mammoths Open Season with 5-0 Shutout of Pride

AMHERST, MASS. — The 14th-ranked Amherst College field hockey team opens the season Wednesday night with a 5-0 victory over Springfield College on Hill Field. 

The Mammoths scored goals in each of the four quarters, with Justine Liguori scoring the first goal of the season approximately 3 minutes into the game. Isa Lattuada, Molly Donegan, Sam Maynard, and Maya Harrington followed suit, each netting a goal to secure victory for the Mammoths. 

Next up for the Mammoths is some NESCAC action against Connecticut College this Saturday on Hill Field. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: 
* The Mammoth's offense had a busy day, firing six shots in the first quarter, with Anna Aiello assisting both shots that turned into goals for Amherst. The Mammoths found themselves awarded four penalty corners in the first quarter.

* The second quarter included multiple subs on behalf of Springfield College, with the Mammoths finding themselves on the offensive side of the field for the majority of the game. Amherst fired seven shots, one of which found the goal following a bold assist by Sam Maynard to set up Molly Donegan to score the game's third goal.

* The Mammoths continued to put intense pressure on Springfield's defense in the third quarter, highlighted by a smooth assist from Kate Smith that enabled Sam Maynard to dodge a dense group of defenders to score for Amherst.  

* Despite the 4-0 lead, the Mammoths did not let up in the fourth quarter, with Abby Kayes assisting Maya Harrington to a goal with less than three minutes remaining on the clock. Amherst College goalie Grace Puchalski secured the Mammoth's shutout with two saves in the final quarter. 

BY THE NUMBERS: 

* Amherst had a 24-2 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in penalty corners in the game.  

* The victory was Amherst's 10th straight over Springfield, pushing their overall record to 14-5 against Springfield.
