#9 Mammoths drop 3-2 decision to Colby in OT

WATERVILLE, Me. — Amherst and Colby were tied for the majority of the game this Sunday on Bill Alfond Field, with goals scored in the second and fourth quarter by Justine Liguori and Molly Donegan. Colby's overtime goal led to the narrow defeat of the Mammoths, 3-2.

Amherst is now 5-4 overall and 1-4 in the NESCAC, while the Mules stand at 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference. Next up for the Mammoths is a NESCAC home game this Saturday at 12pm against Wesleyan. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Puchalski blocked all 3 shots fired by Colby in the first quarter, playing excellent defense for the Mammoths and ensuring that the Mules would not score in the opening quarter.

* Sam Maynard fired two promising back-to-back shots roughly seven minutes into the game that were narrowly blocked by Colby's goalie. Caroline Busler and Abbey Kays each fired shots that looked promising but were again saved by Colby's Leah Anderson.  

* Seconds into the second quarter, Puchalski saved a rocket fired by Colby's offense. The ball continued to be passed between the Mule's offense before finding a hole which put Colby on the scoreboard.

* The Mammoths continued to battle in the second quarter. Justine Liguori was inserted for a penalty corner, and a shot was fired that was saved by Colby. Once the ball was back into play, Sam Maynard took possession and assisted Liguori in scoring, putting the Mammoths on the scoreboard for the first time in the game. This goal would be Liguori's fourth individually this season. The score came just 2:09 before halftime.

* Puchalski racked up 9 saves in the third quarter, ensuring that the tie between Amherst and Colby would remain through the end of the third quarter. Charlotte Domittner had an impressive defensive save in the third quarter, knocking the ball away from the goal. 

* The game was tied 1-1 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Anna Aiello gained possession of the ball and passed the ball to Molly Donegan, who re-directed the past the goalie for a 2-1 lead with 8:31 left in the game.

* With less than 4 minutes remaining in the match, a shot was fired by Colby's Campbell that found a hole in the Mammoth's defense, and the game was tied. The Mammoths were narrowly defeated just a little over a minute into overtime when Colby's Mitchell scored the game's final goal. 

BY THE NUMBERS:  

* Amherst's record against Colby stands at 19-7 overall following this loss.

* Amherst had a disadvantage in both shots and penalty corners, 23-18 and 14-9, respectively.

* The Mammoths out-saved the Mules 15-9, behind Puchalski's saves as goalie.
