9/29/2024 11:28:00 AM

MEDFORD, MA - On Saturday, the Amherst College men's tennis team took to the courts for the second day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Regional Championships. With the Rounds of 64 and 32 completed on Friday, only 16 pairs and players remained in the doubles and singles draws, respectively.

RESULTS:
Doubles:
  • Amherst saw two pairs of players advancing to the Round of 16 in doubles competition: Seniors Sujit Chepuri and Edred Opie, alongside Sophomore Ethan Ohm and First-year Albert Hu. Both pairs were eager to build on their successes from the previous day and sought a spot in the quarterfinals. At 9am on the outdoor courts at Tufts University, the pairs unfortunately fell short.
  • Opie and Chepuri lost to Noah Laber and Thehan Wijemanne of Middlebury, the #3 seeds, with a score of 8-3. Similarly, Ohm and Hu lost to the #8 seeds, Alex Ganchev and Sasha Maes of Tufts, 8-4.
Singles:
  • After his morning doubles match, Opie shifted his focus to the singles. He and Sophomore Andreas Sillaste had exciting Round of 16 matches to play in the afternoon.
  • Sillaste's efforts were unsuccessful versus Tufts' Alex Ganchev, losing 6-2 6-0. Opie won his match, however, in straight sets. The Brit beat the #7 seed, Nicholas Chen of Williams, 6-1 6-3.
  • Opie's next challenge was Vuk Vuksanovic of Tufts, seeded #1 in the tournament. In a hard-fought battle, he was unsuccessful in three sets with a score of 4-6 6-1 6-4.
UP NEXT:
  • The Mammoths have one more weekend of their Fall season. On Saturday, October 12, Amherst will travel to New London, CT, to play a dual-match doubleheader that will count towards their Spring season record. Amherst will take on the Connecticut College Camels on their home courts in the morning and then the Nichols College Bisons at the same place at 2pm.
