WALTHAM, Mass. --
Matt Tabet tossed six strong innings Tuesday and the Amherst College baseball team overcame seven errors to clip Brandeis 4-3 on the Judges' Stein Diamond.
With the win, Amherst sits at 19-8 on the season heading into Wednesday's scheduled contest at Elms College. First pitch is 5 p.m. The Judges fell to 5-27 on the season.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Senior
Jack Dove reached on an error and promptly stole second.
Charlie LaFreniere followed with a line single that scored Dove from second.
* Brandeis scored twice in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.
* Amherst regained the lead with two runs in the top of the third inning.
Jack McDermott and
Ryan McIntyre led off with back-to-back singles. After an out, the pair pulled off a double steal. Dove then scored McDermott with a ground out to third. With two outs,
Tyler McCord ripped a single to score McIntyre for the 3-2 lead.
* Amherst added a key run in the fifth when McIntyre led off with a single, took second on an error on the play, and third on an out. Dove then scored him with a grounder to short for a 4-2 lead.
*Tabet started the seventh inning for the Mammoths, but after a lead-off single and an error put runners on first and second with nobody out, head coach
J.P. Pyne called on
Tyson Luna. The southpaw retired the first batters, but a throwing error after the out was recorded allowed a run to score. With the score 4-3 and runners on second and third and one out, Luna was able to strike out the next two batters to escape the inning with the lead.
* Luna got through the eighth- a Judge reached on an error but was thrown out trying to steal -- and
Jack Sampedro took over for the ninth leading 4-3. A hit batsmen and another error put two runners on with two outs, but Sampedro fanned the final batter to earn the save.
* Tabet, a first-year, improved to 3-1, tossing six innings and allowing seven hits and three runs, all unearned, while walking one and fanning two.
* Amherst knocked out 10 hits. McCord was 3 for 4 with an RBI. McDermott was 3 for 5 with 1 run scored.
