Mammoths slow down Blazers in 14-4 victory

CHICOPEE, Mass. -- Senior Luke Padian was 3 for 5 with 4 RBIs Wednesday and classmate Jacob Ribitzki picked up his first win of the season to help the Amherst College baseball team defeat host Elms College, 14-4.

Amherst picked up its 20th win of the season, improving to 20-8 overall. Elms fell to 16-19 on the season. The Mammoths will travel to rival Williams for a 4 p.m. game Friday. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Jack McDermott worked a one-out walk and Ryan McIntyre reached on an error to put runners on the corners. The pair then executed a double steal, with McDermott stealing home for a 1-0 lead. Jack Dove then laced a single to score McIntyre. Dove stole second and advanced to third on a balk. Jack Sampedro worked a walk Padian delivered an RBI-single that scored Dove. 

* Amherst made it an early 9-0 lead with a six-run second inning. Christian Fagnant led off the frame with a single and Javier Irizarry walked. Jack Boyle then connected for a two-run triple to make it 5-0 Mammoths. McDermott ripped an RBI-single to score Boyle and advanced to second on a groundout. McDermott stole third and scored on a wild pitch as Dove walked. Dove stole second and took third on a throwing error. Padian capped the outburst with a two-run double for the nine-run advantage. 

* A four-run sixth inning highlighted by an RBI-single from Padian and a two-run double by Boyle made it 14-3 Amherst.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Ribitzki went the first six-plus frames for the Mammoths, allowing seven hits and four runs, walking one and striking out three. 

* Boyle was 2 for 4 with 4 RBI for Amherst, which finished with 11 hits. Charlie LaFrenierre was also 2 for 4.
