MAHWAH, N.J. -- A seven-run third inning allowed the Amherst College baseball team to rally from an early deficit to post an 8-2 win over Ramapo College in the Mammoths season opener Saturday.
Amherst, 1-0, is next slated to play Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. on the road against WPI.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Down 2-0 after two,
Jack Boyle got things started for Amherst in the third when he singled through the right side of the infield.
Jack Sampedro followed with a single. An RBI-double to left by
Jack McDermott cu the Amherst deficit in half. After a walk to
Ryan McIntyre loaded the bases,
Luke Padian was plunked with a pitch to force home Sampedro with the tying run. Senior
Jack Dove then drove a two-run single to right for a 4-2 Amherst lead. First-year
Charlie LaFreniere followed with a two-run double for a 6-2 lead. Senior
Javier Irizarry capped the inning with an RBI-single for a five-run Amherst lead.
* The Mammoths added a run in the top of the seventh when
Christian Fagnant doubled and scored on a wild pitch.
By THE NUMBERS:
* Senior
Nicholas Giattino (1-0) struck out three, walked four and scattered three hits to earn his first victory of the season.
Tristan Kim worked the final inning as he struck out two and faced the minimum three batters.
* The Mammoths had nine hits. Fagnant went 2 for 4 with a run scored. Seven other Mammoths had one hit. Boyle was 1 for 2 with 2 walks.
* Game 2 was called by rain in the bottom of the fourth.
