Mammoths break out the bats in 19-6 win over WPI

NORTHBORO, Mass. -- Senior Luke Padian went 4 for 5 with 3 RBIs and 5 runs scored Tuesday to help pace a 22-hit attack by the Amherst College baseball team, which snapped Worcester Polytechnic Institute's seven-game win streak to start the season with a 19-6 victory at the New England Baseball Complex.

Amherst improved to 2-0 on the season. The Mammoths will play SUNY-Cobleskill Sunday at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. WPI fell to 7-1 on the season.

Senior Jack Dove was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored while classmate Christian Fagnant went 3 for 5 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored -- plus a double and a home run -- in the victory.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths wasted no time, putting a five-spot on the board in the top of the first.  Jack Sampedro led off the game with a double to left. After an out, Ryan McIntyre reached on an error. Padian followed with a double to right that scored both runners for a 2-0 Amherst lead. Dove then crushed a ground-rule double to score Padian. Fagnant followed that by crushing a ball to right that cleared the fence for a two-run homer and 5-0 lead.

* It was 6-1 Mammoths when they exploded for five more runs in the top of the fourth. Padian led off with a single and Dove was hit by a pitch. Fagnant lined a single to left that scored Padian. Charlie LaFreniere singled to center to load the bases. Javier Irizarry's fielder's choice scored another run. After the second out, Sampedro singled to center to score a run and Jack McDermott drove a ball into the right-center field gap which scored two and gave the Mammoths an 11-1 lead.

* Amherst scored six runs on five hits and two WPI errors to put the game away in the top of the seventh. Padian, Dove and McDermott had RBI-singles. Fagnant added an RBI-double.
