Bob Gross had three goals and two assists while senior goalkeeper
Mitch Likins came up with 13 saves Wednesday as the 12th-ranked Amherst College men's lacrosse team upset 10th-ranked Gettysburg on its home turf, Shirk Field.
It was the fifth win in a row for the Mammoths, who improved to 5-1 on the season. They will stay on the road to take on Bowdoin in Brunswick, Me. Saturday at 1 p.m. Gettysburg fell to 3-3 on the season.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Gettysburg took an early 1-0 lead, but the Mammoths responded with four consecutive goals to create a three-goal advantage.
Brendan Reilly tied the game with 7:52 remaining in the first quarter with an unassisted goal. With 3:25 to go in the period,
Alex Giacobbe took a pass from Gross and scored from close range for a 2-1 lead.
Thompson Lau followed with another goal just 60 seconds later.Â
* To open the second stanza,
Nicholas Kopp won a face-off and took off toward the Bullets' goal, where he dished off to Gross, who quickly fired a shot past the netminder for a 4-1 lead only nine seconds into the quarter.Â
* After Gettysburg made it 4-2, Amherst reeled off three consecutive goals to create a five-goal lead.
Bennett Chow and Kopp scored five second apart, as again Kopp won the face-off after Chow's unassisted score and raced downfield to fire a shot past the Bullets' keeper. Gross scored his second goal, an unassisted tally, with 9:05 left in the half to make it 7-2.Â
* The Bullets would turn the tide, scoring the final three goals of the first half to go into the locker room down 7-5, then netting the only goal by either team in the entire third quarter to close within one at 7-6.Â
* At the 13:50 mark of the final stanza, Giacobbe snapped the scoreless streak for the Mammoths, converting a pass from Gross into a goal and an 8-6 lead. Gross would complete the scoring for Amherst 5:22 later when he received a pass from Chow and rocketed a shot past the goalkeeper for a 9-6 lead with 8:28 remaining.Â
* Again, Gettysburg would respond, But Likins would come up with two big saves too, one of a Ryan Cernuto shot with 5:29 left and one on a Quinton Mather shot with 4:07 to go, to keep the Mammoths on top.Â
* Gettysburg would score with 2:11 remaining to make it 9-8, but Kopp won the ensuing face-off and the Bullets' would not get another shot on goal.Â
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The shots on goal were an even 21-21 between the two teams.Â
* Gettysburg had a 31-28 advantage in ground balls while Amherst won 13 of 21 face-offs in the game.Â
* The Mammoths had 16 turnovers, Gettysburg 15.Â

Ben Steingass had two caused turnovers. Kopp won 13 of 21 face-offs and led the team with eight ground balls.
