#10 Mammoths' Fourth-Quarter rally falls short in 15-13 loss to #16 Lynchburg

PHILADELPHIA, PA. -- The 10th-ranked Amherst College men's lacrosse team stormed back in the fourth quarter Saturday but ultmately fell a little short, losing to #16th-ranked Lynchburg University, 15-13, on the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field. 

The Mammoths had their five-game win streak snapped and now sit at 5-2 overall. They are at Little 3 rival Wesleyan Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. contest.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* First-quarter goals by Bob Gross and Brendan Reilly put Amherst up early, 2-0, but Lynchburg fought back to tie the game 2-2 by the end of the opening 15 minutes. 

*  Lynchburg scored the first four goals of the second stanza to take a 6-2 lead. Mammoth Alex Giacobbe snapped that run with a goal that came with 4:28 remaining to make it 6-3. After Lynchburg answered, Bennett Chow scored an unassisted goal for Amherst with 1:39 left that accounted for the 7-4 halftime score. 

* Chow opened the third-quarter scoring wiht an unassisted tally that made it 7-5 59 seconds into the period. 

* The Hornets exploded for seven goals in the 13:23 of the quarter to take a commanding 14-8 lead by the end of the quarter. 

* Down 15-9, the Mammoths scored the final four goals of the game. Giacobbe scored three straight, including a man-up goal. Reilly scored off a pass from Gross with 30 seconds left in the game, but Lynchburg won the ensuing face-off to take more time off the clock. A final Amherst shot with 11 seconds left went wide and the clock expired. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Giacobbe had a 7-point game, scoring 6 times and assisted on another tally. Reilly finished with 4 goals in the loss. 

* Amherst had a 47-33 edge in shots. The groundball totals were 30-30 to a side. 

* Thompson Lau led the Mammoths with 8 groundballs and 3 caused turnovers.
