Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#4 Mammoths cruise past Curry, 5-1

CANTON, Mass. --  – A true team effort helped the fourth-ranked Amherst College women's hockey team to victory Friday night against Curry College Colonels. Alyssa Xu and Julia Weiss' first-period goals, Ellie DeCarlo and Marie-Eve Marleau's second-period goal, and Maeve Reynolds third-period goal -- along with Maleigh Tittel's 15 saves -- allowed the Mammoths to achieve another 4 goal differential win, their third of the season. 

With the win Amherst improves to 18-2-2 and Curry College falls to 9-11-2. The Mammoths next play Friday, February 16 against NESCAC rival Williams College at Lansing Chapman Rink at 7 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: 

* The Mammoths started the game off strong with a power play only 22 seconds into the first period. With 19:11 left Rylee Glennon from top right passed to  Alyssa Xu on her right, who then took a shot finding the top left of the net scoring the first goal of the game. 

* With 10:34 left the Colonels went on a power play of their own. With a sliding save from Amherst keeper Maleigh Tittel, and a block from Clare O'Connor and Emily Hohmann the Mammoths were able to successfully complete the penalty kill. 

*With 3:39 left the Mammoth went up by 2, when Tammy Zhu found the puck in front of the Colonels goal, she took a shot that was rebounded by Curry College goalkeeper Sarah Kerr. Julia Weiss was able to find the rebound, taking a shot to the bottom right, scoring the Mammoths second goal of the game and her first of the season. 

* In the second period, with 14:31 left, the Mammoths stole the puck from the Colonels in their attacking third. Ellie DeCarlo skated towards the goal taking a shot that was deflected, but she was able to find the rebound and score, putting the Mammoths up by 3. 

* The Colonels came right back at the Mammoths, when, with 14:14 left, Danielle Reid stole the puck from the Mammoths at the half and skated down the ice, taking an uncontested shot to the top right of the Mammoths goal, making the score 3-1. 

* The Mammoths scored again 9:27 into the second when Maeve Reynolds found Marie-Eve Marleau in front of the Colonels goal. Marleau took a shot, that rebounded off Ker, then took another this time finding the back of the net and making the score 4-1. 

* In the third period, with 9:48 left the Colonels had a nice opportunity at goal. Grayson Goolgasian skated down the middle of the ice taking a shot to the bottom right, but Tittel slide to save it. 

* With 4:27 left the Mammoths scored again, with Marleau stealing the puck from the Colonels and passing to Reynolds right in front of Curry's goal, who one timed the puck to the top right making the score 5-1.  
 
BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Mammoths oushot the Colonels 49-16 overall. 
* Curry won 22 out of 42 faceoffs. 
* Both teams where whistled for one penalty. The Mammoths went 1-1 on their power-plays.  
* Kerr had 44 saves, Tittel had 15.
