Trinity pulls away from Mammoths, 45-20, on Senior Day

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College football team's Senior Day featured an electrifying back-and-forth battle between the Trinity College Bantams and the Mammoths that culminated in a 45-20 victory for the Bantams.

The Mammoths fell to 2-6, while the Bantams improved to 7-1. The Mammoths will travel to face-off against rival Williams College for their last game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 9, at noon for kick-off on Farley-Lamb field in Williamstown, MA.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths were hot off the jump. In the Bantam's second drive of the game, Luke Harmon intercepted a pass down the middle and returned for 21 yards. This set Amherst up for a 19-yard touchdown reception from QB Marek Hill to Matthew Diaz. A successful kick by Hudson Fulcher-Melendy gave The Mammoths an early lead, 7-0.

* In the next Trinity drive, Amherst's Matthew Monteleone forced a fumble and Tylik Sims recovered and returned the ball to the Mammoths' 43. Hill then threw a 38-yard reception to Christian Moore, putting Amherst at 1st and goal. But a strong Trinity defense prevented another Mammoths touchdown, with Ronald Scott II intercepting what would have been a touchdown pass.

* A scoreless Bantum drive gave the Mammoths another chance. A 42-yard reception and run by Carter Jung put Amherst in the Trinity red zone once again, but the Bantams put a defensive lockdown that shut down any hope of another touchdown. The Mammoths went for a field goal kick instead, as Fulcher-Melendy booted it 25 yards and to make the score 10-0.

* Trinity found their footing in the next drive. After a sack by Harmon, the Bantam's QB Zander Zebrowski threw an 81-yard touchdown bomb to Sean Clapp. A good kick from Matthew Jumes put Trinity on the board, 10-7.

* A huge 30-yard punt return and a 29-yard reception, both by Jung, created a scoring  opportunity for another Mammoth touchdown. But an interception by Trinity's Jason Irizarry Jr. in the end zone left Amherst frustrated again. The Bantams then converted with a 44-yard touchdown reception by Clapp. A successful kick transferred the lead to Trinity, 14-10.

* The Bantams continued to heat up for the rest of the first half. Skye Dolce intercepted an Amherst pass and returned for 19 yards to set Trinity up for another touchdown after a rush by Tyler DiNapoli. A scoreless Amherst drive opened the door for another Bantam touchdown, fueled by a series of short receptions that steadily moved Trinity to the Amherst end zone. At the end of the first half, the score was 28-10 for Trinity.

* At the start of the second half, Amherst's Kemit Fisher forced a fumble and earned possession for the Mammoths. This set the offense up for a steady push to the Trinity end zone, culminating in a touchdown rush for 6 yards by senior Jack Roberge. Fulcher-Melendy's kick was good, bringing the score to 28-17.

* Both teams got scrappy in the rest of the 3rd quarter. Trinity's Bryce Ferrell intercepted a pass by QB Mason Morrow for a turnover immediately reversed when Harmon forced a fumble by QB Zebrowski and earned back possession for Amherst. A strong defensive effort by Trinity forced the Mammoths into a field goal kick from the 25-yard line, which made the score 28-20.

* The Bantams controlled the rest of the 4th quarter, picking up another turnover after an interception by Charlie Cooper that set Trinity up for a 10-yard touchdown exception by Max Roche. In the next drive, Trinity's Amari Phillips forced a fumble and returned 25 yards, allowing DiNapoli to secure another touchdown following a 20-yard rush. A second fumble by Trinity's John Fiore III and strong defense by Amherst gave the Bantams a field goal score rather than another touchdown. Trinity's scoring run brought the score to 45-20 to close the game.
