Mammoths fall to rival Williams in final game, 21-0

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Amherst College Mammoths fell to rival Williams College, 21-0, on Saturday to close their season.

The Mammoths end their season 2-7, while Williams completed its season at 5-4.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Although Williams scored on an early, well-executed drive, Amherst's defenders, such as Luke Harmon and Tylik Sims, made their presence known with critical tackles, keeping the pressure on Williams' runners and receivers. Harmon was particularly effective, recording multiple tackles that kept Williams from gaining too much momentum after their initial touchdown.

* Amherst's offense also had its moments, with quarterback Marek Hill connecting on a few short passes to move the ball, including a solid 26-yard completion to Cato Legaspi that advanced them into Williams territory. But the Ephs' defense held firm, and despite Hill's efforts to generate positive yardage, Amherst's drive stalled due to a critical sack.

* Amherst's defense regrouped after a few tough early series, holding Williams to minimal yardage on their final possession of the first quarter. Ty Kazanowsky and Carson Skotak helped force Williams into unfavorable downs, signaling that Amherst's defense was adjusting and finding ways to limit Williams' options.

* The second quarter tested Amherst's resilience, as a costly fumble early in the period allowed Williams to extend their lead to 14-0. Despite the setback, the Mammoths regrouped, and their next drive showed flashes of offensive momentum. Hill started hit Sam Gerber for a few short gains before breaking off a 17-yard scramble that pushed Amherst into Williams's territory. Hill's clutch third-down pass to Carter Jung for eight yards kept the drive alive.

*A defensive holding penalty gave the Mammoths a first down at the Williams 27.  A sack left them with a 4th-and-15 and Hill's made scramble went for only 10 yards, forcing Amherst to turn the ball over on downs.

The Mammoths began the second half with a promising drive, as Hill found multiple receivers, including Jung and Keith Delaney, steadily moving the ball downfield. Despite Amherst reaching the Williams 22-yard line, a critical fourth-down stop by the Ephs defense thwarted Amherst's chance to score, keeping the Mammoths off the board.

* Starting from their 23-yard line, Williams initially gained momentum with a 10-yard rush by Jon Oris. However, a holding penalty pushed them back, stalling their drive and resulting in a quick punt.

Amherst, though energetic, struggled to capitalize on subsequent possessions. After a blocked punt gave Williams a favorable field position, Amherst's defense stepped up, limiting the Ephs to minimal yardage and forcing another punt.

*Key stops by players like Trey Doyle and Kazanowsky limited Williams' gains on a late-quarter drive. As the third quarter ended, the Ephs held onto their 14-0 lead, while Amherst's offense displayed flashes of potential but faced challenges in converting yardage into points.

*Amherst's final possession was marred by a fumble and subsequent incomplete passes, eventually ending in a sack by Williams' Ethan Scott. Williams, taking over with under two minutes remaining, simply ran out the clock despite some lost yardage.
