#17 Amherst makes a splash with season-opening victory over Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Amherst College men's swimming and diving team kicked off the 2024-25 season with an impressive victory over NESCAC rival Colby College, posting a decisive 178-116 win in the season opener for both teams.

Sophomore Henry Liu won three individual events and senior Jaden Olson finished first in two individual events and a relay.

The Mammoths, ranked 17th in the nation in the latest CSCAA Division III poll, return to action on Sunday, November 24, hosting Middlebury at noon for the home opener in Pratt Pool.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

* Liu swept the breaststroke events, clocking 57.86 for first place in the 100-yard breaststroke and 2:10.03 to win the 200-yard breaststroke. He added another victory in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:58.27.

* In the sprint events, Olson led the charge, winning the 100-yard freestyle in 47.26 seconds and adding to his impressive meet by taking the 100-yard butterfly in 50.64 seconds.

* Senior Gabriele Lunardi was a force in the distance events, taking the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:36.89 and the 500-yard freestyle with an impressive time of 4:38.09.

* Amherst opened the meet with a strong showing in the 200-yard medley relay, as senior Andrew Yuen, junior Fynlan Nadel, Olson and junior Ethan Van De Water captured first place in a swift 1:33.21.

* Nadel went on to win the 200-yard butterfly, touching in 1:54.64.

* First-year Tyler Palm won the three-meter diving event in his collegiate debut, scoring 204.53 points.
