Mules sweep Mammoths in Saturday showdown


Amherst, Mass -- The Amherst College volleyball team fell short against the Colby College Mules in Saturday's match up. Despite their best efforts, the Mules swept the Mammoths 3-0 (23-25, 20-25, 27-29). 

The Mammoths move to 10-4 (1-4 in the NESCAC), and the Mules advance to 14-1 (4-0 in the NESCAC). The Mammoths will be back in action on the road on Thursday, October 10th at 7 pm to host Springfield College.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

* The Mammoths came out strong in the first set, gaining a 10-6 lead with kills from Charlotte Rasmussen and Anaya Thomas. The Mules held their ground and narrowed the Mammoth lead with two service aces and two kills from Sarah Friedrichs. The set was tied, 22-22, but the Mules claimed the first set with a service ace from Jordan Lee, 25-23.

* The second set was tied at 10-10, but the Mules brought the offensive power, scoring nine straight points to make it a 20-13 game. Kinsey Cronin, Sofia Camilo, and Thomas earned six points for the Mammoths in an attempt to narrow the gap, but the effort wasn't enough, and the Mammoths fell 25-20. 

* The Mules claimed a strong lead in the third set, 11-6. Kills from Rasmussen, Cronin, and Brielle Renwick brought the score to 18-15. The Mammoths maintained their offensive momentum to take the lead 24-22, with Camilo and Thomas each scoring another kill. The game continued, with the points going back and forth. Tied at 27-27, the Mules ended the set off of two consecutive kills to win 29-27.

BY THE NUMBERS 

* Thomas and Cronin each tallied 11 kills for the Mammoths.

* Marjorie Johnson led the Mules with 13 kills in the match.

* Renee Liou led the Mammoths with 35 assists. Renwick earned three blocks on the day.
