SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Amherst College volleyball team fell to non-conference opponent Springfield College 3-0 (26-28, 12-25, 21-25) on the road on Thursday night.
The Mammoths move to 10-5 while the Pride advance to 11-4 on the season. Amherst returns to action on the road on Saturday, October 12 as they face NESCAC rival Wesleyan at 2 pm.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
* Tied at 13-13 in the first set, Springfield began to pull away with four consecutive points to increase the edge to 17-13. Kills from
Anaya Thomas,
Sofia Camilo, and
Kinsey Cronin reduced the margin to 17-16 for the Mammoths. Both teams continued to exchange points until a block from Cronin and Camilo brought the score to 24-24. Ultimately the Pride narrowly claimed the first set 28-26.
* Springfield jumped out to an early 10-4 lead in the second set. The Mammoths traded points reducing the margin to 12-8 off of a block from Camilo and
Brielle Renwick. The Pride posted 11 of the next 12 points to increase the advantage to 23-9. Amherst continued to push but Springfield took the second set 25-12.
* Trailing the Pride 13-9 in the third set, the Mammoths recorded a five-point run off of Springfield errors to take the lead 14-13. Amherst maintained the narrow edge at 18-17, but a 6-1 surge from the Pride brought the score to 21-18. Springfield maintained the lead for the remainder of the set, finishing the night 25-21.
