MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Amherst College volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-21, 15-25, 12-25, 19-25) decision to NESCAC rival Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
The Mammoths shift to 10-6 and 1-5 in NESCAC play while the Cardinals advance to 10-5 and 4-1 on the season. Amherst returns to play on the road on Friday, October 18 as they face NESCAC opponent Connecticut College at 7 pm.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
* As the Mammoths trailed Wesleyan 14-12 in the first set, a four-point surge with a pair of kills from
Sofia Camilo allowed Amherst to claim the lead 16-14. The Mammoths continued to pull away from the Cardinals maintaining their advantage for the remainder of the set. A service ace from
Charlotte Rasmussen gave Amherst their final point as they claimed the first set 25-21.
* Trailing Amherst 4-2 in the second set, an early six-point run gave Wesleyan an 8-4 edge. The Mammoths tried their best to stay within close margins with kills from
Anaya Thomas, Camilo,
Allie McLaughlin, and
Kinsey Cronin, but a strong Cardinal offense gave Wesleyan the advantage to secure the second set 25-15.
* Both teams began the third set with back-and-forth play as Amherst held a slight 6-5 lead. Wesleyan produced a nine-point run to pull ahead 14-6. The Cardinals continued to push concluding the third set with back-to-back kills to finish 25-12.
* Wesleyan never trailed in the forth set of the match, starting out with an early 5-1 lead. The Cardinals continued to push, registering a six-point run to pull ahead of the Mammoths 20-13. Amherst recorded five of the next six points to reduce the margin to 21-18, but a strong Wesleyan attack finished the set 25-19 for the Cardinals.
