Amherst falls to Connecticut College in Friday night showdown

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Amherst College volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (20-25, 19-25, 38-36, 18-25) decision to NESCAC opponent Connecticut College on Friday evening.

The Mammoths move to 10-7 overall and 1-6 in NESCAC action while the Camels improve to 12-6 and 2-5 on the season. Amherst will travel to NESCAC rival Trinity College on Saturday, October 19 for a 2 pm start time. 

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

* The first set was a back-and-forth battle as the teams were tied on nine separate occasions. The Mammoths saw kills from Sofia Camilo, Renee Liou, Charlotte Rasmussen, Kinsey Cronin, Tiana Richardson and Anaya Thomas. With Amherst ahead by one point at 18-17, the Camels posted seven of the next eight points to gain the advantage at 24-19. A kill from Thomas disrupted the Camel streak but a final kill from Connecticut College's Rae Wartelle ended the first set 25-20 in favor of the Camels.

* The Mammoths began the second set with a slight 10-9 lead before Connecticut College recorded an eight-point run to take the lead 17-10. Kills from Brielle Renwick, Audrey Krichev, and Rasmussen helped keep the Mammoths close but the Camels were able to maintain the edge until they claimed the second set 25-19.

* The third set saw thrilling back-and-forth action as both teams exchanged the lead. A kill from Camilo after a good set from Liou forced the play beyond the 25-point set victory as it brought the score to a 24-24 tie. A strong Mammoth offense continued to push the Camels with kills from Thomas, Renwick, Teraszkiewicz, Cronin, and Camilo. A final pair of kills from Camilo secured the impressive 38-36 set victory for Amherst. 

* Tied at 11-11 in the fourth set, Connecticut College recorded a 10-point surge to pull ahead 21-11. The Mammoths continued to persevere but the Camels finished the final set 25-18 and claimed the 3-1 victory. 

BY THE NUMBERS

* Sofia Camilo recorded 10 kills while Charlotte Rasmussen posted eight. 

* Kinsey Cronin notched eight kills and seven blocks. 

* Lizzie Papalia registered 15 digs while Zosia Teraszkiewicz produced 13. 

* Setter Renee Liou totaled 34 assists on the night.
