Polar Bears take bite out of Mammoths, 35-7

AMHERST, Mass. – The Bowdoin Polar Bears took down the Amherst College football team for the first time since 2005 by a score of 35-7 at Amherst's own Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Mammoths fell to 2-3, while the Polar Bears improved to 2-3. The Mammoths will travel to face off against Colby College on October 19th, at 1 p.m. for kick-off on Seaverns Field at Harold Alfond Stadium.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Bowdoin controlled the game from the jump. In the first drive of the game, QB Michael Wolfendale rushed for a total of 45 yards and piloted an early touchdown for the Polar Bears. A successful extra point brought the score to 7-0 for Bowdoin. The opening drive of the game lasted 8:59.

* The rest of the first quarter saw strong defense on both sides. Bowdoin forced a punt in Amherst's first drive with the first ever sack of the game. The Mammoths immediately returned the favor with Ty Kazanowsky putting a stop to two back-to-back Bowdoin rushes.

* A promising drive by Amherst at the start of the 2nd quarter culminated in a 4th-down turnover only one yard away from a first down. The Polar Bears took advantage with another scoring drive, completing 3 passes for 33 yards and a touchdown pass for 6. Another good extra point made the score 14-0 for Bowdoin. 

* The Polar Bears then ended another Amherst drive with a sack by Koy Price. In its ensuing drive, a 26-yard rush by RB Luke Watson set Bowdoin up for another touchdown with 49 gained rushing yards in just three plays. With an extra point, the score was 21-0.

* Both teams were locked down defensively for the remaining first half. Amherst sophomore Nathaniel Jackson picked up his first career sack to put an end to a promising Bowdoin drive. Price sacked for a second time in the next drive by the Mammoths.

* The Mammoths defense was relentless at the onset of the second half with two incterceptions on back-to-back drives by Luke Harmon and Ryan Monteleone. A huge 20-yard reception by the Mammoths' Tom Nash began a promising drive for Amherst that was shut down by the Polar Bears defense. 

* A risky 4th down play by Amherst resulted in a huge interception by Bowdoin's Ferris Collins who was wide open for a 55- yard pick six. A good extra point brought the score to 28-0. 

* The Mammoths finally came alive in the 4th quarter, led by freshman QB Marek Hill who threw a torpedo touchdown reception to Carter Jung for 52 yards. A successful extra point by Hudson Fulcher-Melendymade it a 35-7 game.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Polar Bears led with 20 first downs to Amherst's 11 and in total offensive yards, 248 to 179.

* The Mammoths' WR Jung led in receiving yards with 3 receptions for 72 yards. Sophomore Braedan Donovan had 3 receptions for 34 yards, and senior Jack Roberge had 4 receptions for 23 yards.

* Bowdoin QB Wolfendale rushed for 55 yards and threw for 74 passing yards. Amherst QB Mason Morrow threw for 101 passing yards. Hill threw for 77 passing yards all in the final quarter of the game.

* Amherst's Damian Carrano led defensively with 10 tackles, 7 of which were solo. Nathaniel Jackson had 6 tackles, all of which were solo. Price led in tackles for Bowdoin with 6 total, 5 of which were solo.
