Mules overpower Mammoths with strong offensive performance, 38-7

WATERVILLE, Maine – Colby College brought themselves to a victory over the Amherst College football team, 38-7, Saturday afternoon in NESCAC action on Seaverns Field at Harold Alfond Stadium.

The Mammoths fell to 2-4, while the Mules improved to 2-4. The Mammoths will host Wesleyan University for this fall's Homecoming game, Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. for kick-off on Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mules started off strong with a series of rushing-yard pickups and a huge 33-yard reception by Jack Nye from QB Miles Drake that brought Colby close to the Amherst red zone. Tight coverage by the Mammoths' Ryan Monteleone prevented an early touchdown but gave Colby a successful field goal, leaving the score 3-0.

* After an Amherst three-and-out, Colby QB Drake set the Mules up with a 39-yard reception to Cody Song at the very end of the first quarter. An offensive push at the start of the second quarter gave Colby a touchdown. With a successful extra point by Christos Tzoumakas, the score was 10-0.

* In the next drive, the Mules put the clamps on the Mammoths offense with a third-down sack by Sebastian Romain. Colby followed up with a series of break-away rushes by Keon Smart and Declan McNamara that culminated in another touchdown and successful extra point, bringing the score to 17-0.

* Another sack by Romain on the next Mammoths drive turned the ball over to Colby again, who picked up another touchdown following a 46-yard reception by Brendan Sawyer. A successful extra point made it a 24-0 game.

* Amherst began to pick up speed towards the end of the first half with a reception by Matthew Diaz for 20 yards from freshman QB Marek Hill, but a promising drive was ruthlessly shut down in a fourth-down interception by Colby's Nicholas Cox.

* At the start of the second half, Colby's Trevor Smith forced a fumble that was picked up by Dennis Dougherty, who then returned 16 yards for the Mules. The return set Colby up for another touchdown following an 11-yard reception by Duke Ferrara. The score was 31-0 following a successful extra point.

* The Mammoths finally found a rhythm at the end of the third quarter, with Hill leading Amherst to a touchdown after several short receptions to Carter Jung and Keith Delaney, and a 19-yard touchdown reception to Cato Legaspi at the start of the fourth quarter. An extra point by Hudson Fulcher-Melendy made the score 31-7.
