Mammoths stay unbeaten in dual meets with 197-79 win over Garnet Chargers

AMHERST, Mass. – Three Mammoths won two races each as the Amherst College men's swimming and diving team returned to the pool for the first time in over a month with a 197-79 win over Union College on Saturday afternoon at Pratt Pool.

The Mammoths remained unbeaten in dual meets, improving to 3-0, while the Garnet Chargers fell to 4-2.

Amherst is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 13, visiting 17th-ranked Williams at 1 p.m. for a dual meet to decide the Little Three Championship.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

* Sophomore Henry LeCates picked up his first two wins of the season, capturing the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.61 and the 50-yard butterfly in 23.48 seconds, marking the first meet in LeCates' career in which he won two individual events.

* Junior Jaden Olson won two individual events to remain unbeaten in six individual races this season. Olson captured the 50-yard backstroke in a season-best 23.58 seconds and won the 100-yard freestyle in 47.61 seconds.

* Senior Will Taylor was a winner in both the 1000-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke, winning the 1000 free for the second time this season in 10:11.35 and swimming the 100 back for the first time in his collegiate career in 54.18 seconds.

* Olson and Taylor were part of Amherst's winning 200-yard freestyle relay team, joining sophomore Ethan Van De Water and junior Andrew Bernstein to clock a time of 1:25.74, Amherst's best time this season.

* Van De Water and Bernstein also opened the meet as part of the winning 200-yard medley relay along with seniors Nolan Scanlan and Liam Loveless. The quartet captured the race in 1:35.23.

* Senior Justin Papagelis led an Amherst sweep of the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.19 seconds for his second straight victory in the event.

* First-year Henry Liu led an Amherst sweep in the 100-yard individual medley, posting a personal-best time of 53.35 seconds to win his third race in three collegiate meets in three different events.

* Senior Jeff Gerber sprinted to a win in the 50-yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 26.69 seconds for his first win of the season.

* Sophomore Michael Jang won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:50.59, capturing the event for the first time as a collegian.
