Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Polar Bears cool off Mammoths, 4-2

AMHERST, Mass. Bowdoin College secured a 4-2 victory against the Amherst College men's hockey team at Orr Rink Friday, scoring two goals in each of the first two periods to snap the Mammoth's four-game win streak.

The Mammoths, fell to 7-4-0, 3-3-0 in the NESCC, and will return on their home ice tomorrow at 3 p.m. to face Colby College. Bowdoin improved to 7-2-1 overall, 3-2-1 in the conference.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The Polar Bears took the lead with 12:13 remaining in the first period. Bryce Bollman seized the puck in the right corner of Amherst's zone, delivering a pass to Will Killoran near the blue line. Killoran unleashed the first shot on goal after which Connor Leslie made the initial save. However, Michael Dinges seized the rebound by the crease and flicked it into the net.
  • With 54 seconds left in the opening period, Andy Stoneman intercepted the puck for an offensive breakaway and passed to James Cerepak by the right post. Cerepak made a behind-the-back pass to James Studley on the opposite goalpost for a tip-in shot. 
  • Bowdoin's third goal of the evening occurred with 18:22 left in the second period when Luke Wheeler picked up a wide shot and brought it around the Mammoth's net. Wheeler connected with Richard Davis in the high slot for him to execute a wrist shot into goal. 
  • The Mammoths scored their first goal at 10:36 into the second period. Max Theissen's defensive play with a poke-check sent the puck to Tyler Bourque, who then quickly passed it to Ben Kuzma for a shot toward the top of the net.
  • Minutes later, Studley took a shot from the right face-off circle, but Leslie made a pad save. However, Jackson Holl managed to battle the puck into the crease and score at 11:36 into the second period.
  • The last goal of the evening was credited to the Mammoths with 4:37 remaining in the final period. Zachary Jessie skated the puck up the right side of the ice and delivered a pass to Kuzma in the low slot. Kuzma then took a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net. 

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Both teams won 35 out of the 70 face-offs that were taken, with Bourque winning 16 out of the 24 he took this evening.
  • Amherst outshot Bowdoin 48-28 with shots on goal. 
  • The Polar Bears faced 3 penalties, while the Mammoths faced none, and went 3-0 for penalty-kills. 
  • Leslie saved 24 of the 28 shots he faced on goal tonight.
