#3 Amherst tripped up by Little 3 rival Wesleyan 2-1

AMHERST, Mass. –  Despite outshooting its opponent 31-16 on goal and winning more than two-thirds of the face-offs, the Amherst College women's hockey team was defeated by Wesleyan University 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Orr Rink

The Mammoths pulled their goalie and went 6 on 4 for the final 78 seconds of the contest, but could not find the equalizer.

With the win Wesleyan improves to 8-6-2 and Amherst falls to 12-2-2. Amherst next faces fellow NESCAC team Bowdoin College Friday, January 26 away at Watson Arena for a 7 p.m. puck drop.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

* The Cardinals opened up the scoring 9:12 into the first period. As the Mammoths attempted to clear the puck from their defensive third Effie Tournas stole the puck and took a shot from just left. Her shot rebounded and was found by Shannon Burke who was able to push the puck past Mammoth goalie Natalie Stott for a Wesleyan goal.

* With 6:08 left Maeve Reynolds weaved through the Cardinals' defense shooting to Wesleyan goalie Rei Halloran's right, she slid to make the save. Marie-Eve Marleau just barely missed the rebound in front of the goal and Wesleyan's defense cleared the puck.

* With 4:36 left Alyssa Xu wrapped around the back of the Cardinals net, sending the puck in front of the goal towards Rylee Glennon and Anna Baxter but was unable to connect with either player.

* Only 30 seconds later, the Cardinals returned the heat with Christina Tournas racing down the right side of the ice, but Gretchen Dann stopped her efforts right in front of the Mammoth goal.

* The Mammoths started the second period off strong with a 2v1 opportunity from Alejandra Ubari and Glennon 1:41 into the period, but their shot went wide right.

* With 16:46 left, Mezias had a 1v0 breakaway down the ice, shooting bottom right, but Kelsey Stewart was able to come in and make the block at the last second.

* With 7:35 left Halloran made two back-to-back saves, one a kick and one a cover, stopping Glennon's shots from right in front of the Cardinals goal.

* Only 5:05 into the third period, Xu works the puck around the back of Wesleyan's goal and centers a pass finding Baxter who one-times the puck past Halloran tying the score.

* With 3:37 left, on a Wesleyan power play, Amelia Molin took a shot from high right, Stott slid to make the save, but the puck rebounded right in front of her to Isabelle Allieri who shot top right, putting the Cardinals ahead.
