AMHERST, MA – Goals from
Mary Thompson,
Natalie Fu, and
Alyssa Xu helped the Amherst College women's hockey team hold off Wesleyan University, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Orr Rink It was the Mammoths' fourth straight win.
With the victory Amherst improves to 12-1-2 and Wesleyan falls to 7-6-2. Amherst faces Wesleyan again tomorrow Sunday, January 21, back at Orr Rink for a 3 p.m. puck drop.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* With 14:32 left, Isabelle Allieri took a shot at the Mammoths' goal from high right, Natalie Stott made the save, but the puck was rebounded by Caroline Mezias who took another shot from right in front of the goal, which Stott blocked again.
* With 8:42 left Mary Thompson skated down the right side of the ice weaving around 3 Cardinal defenders, skating across the goal, and shooting bottom right, scoring the first goal of the game for the Mammoths.
* On an Amherst power play, with 4:11 left, from a pass from Emily Hohmann, Amherst's
Gretchen Dann takes a shot at goal and instead finds
Natalie Fu who was able to net the puck scoring the second goal of the game.
* In the second period, the Mammoths started another power play 8:44 into the period. Rylee Glennon skated down the left side of the ice past the Cardinal's goal, back passing to
Ellie DeCarlo, who took a shot but was blocked by Mairead Kennedy.
* With 2:18 left Decarlo stole the puck from the Cardinals, taking a shot from close right, but was stopped by Wesleyan goalkeeper Rei Halloran
* With 23 seconds left the Cardinals skated down the ice man up, but Dann was able to steal the puck from Wesleyan, and Clare O'Connor cleared the puck back to the Mammoths' scoring half.
* The Cardinals started their first power play 5:21 into the third period. With 5 saves from Stott the Mammoths successfully completed the penalty kill. Two of the saves were within seconds, coming from a shot from Aimee Seppenwolde from the right which Stott made a kick save for, and then a rebound shot from Dylan Green from the left which she covered.
* With 8:53 left Jenna Stevens skated down the entire length of the rink, through the Mammoths' defense, shooting to the bottom right past right and putting the Cardinals on the scoreboard.
* With 2:36 left Wesleyan pulled Halloran. The Mammoths were able to steal the puck from the Wesleyan offense, resulting in Alyssa Xu taking a shot near the Wesleyan blue line and scoring on the open net, making the score 3-1.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths outshot the Cardinals 25-17 in the first period, and 30-10 in the second. The Cardinals outshot the Mammoths 21-18 in the third period.
* Amherst won 33 of 49 face-offs, with Maeve Reynolds winning 12.
* Wesleyan was whistled for 4 penalties and Amherst 2. Amherst went 1-4 for power plays and Wesleyan 0-2.
* Halloran had 28 saves, 13 of which were in the second period. Stott had 25 saves.
