CANTON, Mass. – An overtime goal scored by
Matt Toporowski carried the Amherst College men's ice hockey team to a 4-3 win over Curry College at the Canton Ice House on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mammoths now carry a four-game win streak with a 7-3-0 record overall, while the Colonels fall to 8-4-1. They will face their next opponent, defending NESCAC champion Bowdoin College, this Friday (Jan. 5) at 7 p.m. for their third home game of the season at Orr Rink.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Just 18 seconds into the opening period,
Zachary Jesse received the puck off of a clear by the right corner, where he sent a wrist shot toward the net that was tipped in by
Connor Guest for the Mammoths' first goal.
* With 7:14 left in the first period, the Colonels intercepted the puck and sent it across the ice to Gage Dill. The winger skated toward the goaltender one-on-one, making a pull that sent the puck into the net to tie the score.
* The Colonels scored on a power play as Matt Connor, positioned on the blue line, received the puck and sent it off the boards. After a series of passes, the puck returned to Connor, who shot it into Amherst goalie
Alex Wisco's pads. Despite the block, Killian Rowlee intercepted the deflection and passed it to Eelis Laaksonen on the opposite post, who tipped it into the goal with 1:36 left in the first period.
* The Mammoths seized on a power-play opportunity in the second period with 3:36 remaining.
Quinton Fox, stationed at the right end of Curry's zone, received the puck and fed it back to
Ben Ritter, who took the first shot. The deflection returned to Fox, and he promptly shot it into the crease.
Ryan Tucker then maneuvered around the goaltender to score and tie the game at 2-2.
* After winning a face-off,
Josh Burke carried the puck into the high slot and slipped it to his right, where
Tyler Bourque was positioned to flick the puck into the top left corner of the net at 16:42 into the third period.
* Curry leveled the score with their third goal at 17:11 in the third period. The play began in Amherst's zone, with Dill retrieving the puck from behind the net and delivering it to Laaksonen. Laaksonen executed a spin move just inside the right post for his second goal of the evening.
* With 2:20 remaining in the overtime period,
Jacob Pohl passed the puck to Toporowski from behind. Toporowski maneuvered through neutral ice, executing a two-on-one play, and successfully found the back of the net to score the game-winning goal.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Curry won 42 out of the 70 faceoffs, with Laaksonen winning 14 of the 21 he took.
* Amherst had a 37-28 advantage in shots on goal.
* Both sides netted power-play goals as Curry was 1 for 3 on the power play and Amherst was 2 for 6.
* Wisco made 25 saves in net to earn the win for the Mammoths, including 10 saves in the second period alone.
