NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Goals from Marie Marleau and
Anna Baxter, as well as
Natalie Stott's 24 saves, led the Amherst College women's hockey team to a 2-1 team win against the Connecticut College Camels on Saturday afternoon.
With the win Amherst improves to 10-1-2 and Connecticut falls to 5-5-4. Amherst faces Norwich University on Tuesday, January 16, at Kreitzberg Arena for a 6:00 p.m. puck drop.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Only 2:50 into the first period, Claire Sammons passed from the bottom left of the Camels' scoring third to Alana Burm who was directly in front of the Mammoth net and was able to push the puck past Natalie Stott, scoring the first goal of the game.
* A minute and a half later, with 16:17 left, Maeve Reynolds skated down the right side of the ice, sending a pass across the Camels' goal and finding
Marie-Eve Marleau who one-timed the puck past Devon Galizio tying the score.
* The Mammoths struck again when, with 14:13 to go, Gretchen Dann got the puck off an Amherst face-off win, shooting from far left. Her shot was blocked but
Anna Baxter rebounded it scoring another goal for the Mammoths.
* In the second period, with 14:23 left, Marleau stole the puck from Connecticut College and skated across the Camels' net, shooting just wide.
* With 3:55 left, the Camels turned over the puck, Rylee Glennon found it trying to backhand a shot from the left of the Camels' net, but her shot was saved by Galizio.
* In the third period, 4:32 into the period, Casey Chesner skated down the left side of the ice, passing to Casey Godfrey who took a shot in front of the net, but it deflected off the crossbar.
* With 7:06 left Carlisle Brush skated through the Camels' defense taking a shot at goal, but was blocked by Sydney Cresta.
* With 1:49 left Connecticut pulled Galizio for an extra skater in a last-ditch attempt to tie the score. Stott and the Mammoths' defense were able to stop their efforts.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths outshot the Camels 19-9 in the first period and 17-13 in the second. The Camels outshot the Mammoths 24-14 in the third.
* The Mammoths won 27 of 47 face-offs, with Baxter winning 12 and Reynolds 11.
* The Camels were whistled for 2 penalties and the Mammoths for 1.
* Galizio made 28 saves. Stott made 24 saves, 14 of which were in the third period.
