Mammoths suffer sweep at hands of rival Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- The Amherst College volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (19-25, 23-25, 18-25) defeat at the hands of conference rival Williams College at the Chandler Gymnasium Friday night.

The Mammoths fell to 3-6 overall, 0-3 in NESCAC play, while Williams remained unbeaten at 8-0 and 3-0 in the conference. Amherst is off until Friday, September 29th, when it travels to Brunswick, Maine to take on Bowdoin College at 7 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst fell behind quickly 5-0 and trailed 22-12 at one point, but the Mammoths proceeded to win six points in a row to trim the deficit to four, pressuring the Ephs into calling their first timeout of the match at 22-18. Chideraa Ngwadom and Bailey Reid had back-to-back kills in the run, and Lizzie Papalia contributed an ace. Williams led 24-18 when Chloe Chanren had a kill set up by Renee Liou to bring Amherst within five again, but the match ended on the next serve.

* Williams took an early 10-3 lead in the second set, but the Mammoths rallied to take a 17-16 lead. Down 16-15, Mammoths Anaya Thomas and Kinsey Cronin had back-to-back blocks. Williams rallied for a 20-18 lead, but a kill from Cronin and an ace from Liou tied the match, 20-20. Back-to-back kills from Cronin and Tiana Richardson gave the Mammoths a 23-22 lead, but Williams scored the set's final three points to take the set 25-23.

* Williams built a 10-6 third-set lead, but the Mammoths fought back within two at 14-12. The Ephs scored three straight to make it 17-12, but once again Amherst fought back with four straight points to cut the deficit to just one point at 17-16. Ngwadom had two kills, Chanren and ace, and Cronin a kill to account for the run. The Ephs closed out the set -- and the match -- with a 7-1 run to take set three, 25-18.
