Mammoths snap 4-match losing streak with sweep of JWU

AMHERST, Mass. -- Carly Cooper had 13 assists and Kinsey Cronin added 7 kills an 4 blocks Tuesday night as the Amherst College volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak by sweeping Johnson & Wales University, 3-0, in LeFrak Gymnasium.

Amherst improved to 3-5 on the season with the sweep. The Mammoths are at Bowdoin Friday at 7 p.m. JWU fell to 2-7.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths trailed in set one, 13-11, but reeled off 11 of the next 12 points to take a commanding lead.  Four attack errors from the Wildcats were sandwiched around two Chideraa Ngwadom kills to help the Mammoths take over the lead. Katelyn Hamasaki had an ace as well. Near the end of the set, Anaya Thomas and Cronin came up with big kills, and Cronin teamed up with Charlotte Rasmussenon a block to end the set in Amherst's favor, 25-19. 

* The Mammoths fashioned a dramatic rally to win the second set. Trailing 22-19, the Mammoths won 6 of the next 7 points. A Rasmussen killed made it 22-20. Bailey Reid had a kill that made it 22-22, It was 23-23 when Cooper led Ngwadom to the net with a nice set and the first-year drove it home for a kill and a one-point lead. A Reid serve then led to an attack error for JWU and a Mammoths 25-23 win. 

* The third and final set was tied 18-all when Amherst scored four straight points to build a 22-18 lead. First-year Brielle Renwick came up with a solo block for a 19-18 Amherst lead. After an JWU attack error, Thomas came up with a big finish for a 21-18 lead. Cronin then had a block to account for the four-point lead. 

* It was 24-20 Amherst when the Wildcats scored three straight points to make it a one-point set, but a Cooper kill ended the set and the match in the favor of the Mammoths. 

BY THE NUMBERS: 

* Ngwadom and Bailey each had six kills for the Mammoths. Rasmussen and Ngwadom each had three blocks. Lizzie Papalia led the defensive effort with 12 digs while Hamasaki finished with 11. Renee Liou had 12 assists.
