Amherst falls victim to sweep at Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, VT. -- The Amherst College volleyball team suffered its second straight conference loss Saturday afternoon, falling to Middlebury in the Panthers' Pepin Gymnasium, 25-19, 25-13, 25-16.

The Mammoths are now 2-5 on the season, 0-2 in conference play. They will host Johnson & Wales University Tuesday at 7 p.m. 

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

* The opening set was a back-and-forth affair. Trailing 11-9, the Panthers went on a 5-1 run, highlighted by back-to-back kills from Molly Harrison, to move into a 14-12 lead.

* With Middlebury holding a 17-14 edge, Amherst rattled off three-straight points to knot the stanza at 17-17.Renee Liou had a kill and Katelyn Hamasaki a service ace to help tie u the match. 

* The Panthers pulled away for a victory, winning eight of the next 10 points, capped by a kill from Gabbie O'Toole, to take the set by a score of 25-19.

* Leading 7-5 in the middle frame, Middlebury scored nine unanswered points to storm into a 16-5 lead. Harrison, O'Toole and Katie Kraczkowsky each tallied kills during the run as the Panthers eased to a 25-13 victory in the second set. 

* With the score at 8-4 in the third set, the Panthers added to their lead, going on a 6-1 run, capped by a service ace from Harrison, to make it 14-5.
Middlebury continued to increase its advantage, winning six of the next 10 points to take an 11-point edge (20-9).

BY THE NUMBERS:

*The programs met for the 49th time in the all-time series, with the Panthers winning seven of the last 11 contests.

* Cronin had six kills and three blocks for the Mammoths. Anaya Thomas and Chideera Ngwadom had four kills each for the Mammoths. Carly Cooper had 11 assists.

* Harrison (16) and Kraczkowsky (12) each registered double-digit kills during the victory.
