Mia Bawendi breaks Amherst pole vault record as Mammoths win eight events at Amherst Spring Fling

AMHERST, Mass. – Junior Mia Bawendi broke the Amherst pole vault record and sophomore Eliza Cardwell won two events as the Amherst College women's track and field team won eight events at the Amherst Spring Fling, hosted by the Mammoths on Saturday at the Neuhoff-Lumley Track and Hitchcock Field.

The Mammoths are back in action next weekend, competing on Friday at the Silfen Invitational at Connecticut College and on both Friday and Saturday at the Coffey Invitational at Smith College.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

* Bawendi became the first Mammoth to clear 3.60m in the pole vault, breaking the Amherst record of 3.40m that Bawendi shared with two teammates, and winning the event with a mark that ranks in the top 20 nationally in Division III so far this season.

* Cardwell won the 100m hurdles in 14.51 seconds, a time that ranks in the top 20 in the nation so far this season. First-year Arissa Grace McGowan was just behind, finishing second in 14.76 seconds.

* Cardwell also won the long jump with a leap of 5.42m and finished second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:04.23, also among the top 20 in the nation, with first-year Myeh Medina just behind in third place at 1:06.59.

* Senior Mary Kate McGranahan won the steeplechase, making a pass on the final lap to cover the 3000m in a personal-best time of 10:49.85, a time that ranks in the top 20 in the nation.

* Sophomore Sylvan Wold captured the 1500m in a personal-best 4:40.31 for her first collegiate win in the event.

* First-year Allison Lounsbury finished first in the 5000m with a time of 17:38.44 in her first outdoor collegiate start at that distance.

* The Mammoths closed the meet with a first-place finish in the 4x400m relay as first-year Mads Rabb, sophomore Casie Eifrig and first-years Piper Lentz and Halle Hanna, posted a time of 4:01.34, a national top-20 time so far this season.
