AMHERST, Mass. --
Jack Dove and
Jack McDermott each had three hits Tuesday afternoon, pacing the Amherst College baseball team's 11-hit attack as the Mammoths defeated visiting Elms College, 9-6 on Memorial Field.
Amherst improved to 17-10-1 on the season. The Mammoths are at M.I.T. Wednesday for a 4 p.m. start. Elms fell to 20-13 with the loss.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* A five-run second inning made all the difference as the Mammoths erased a 2-1 deficit and took a lead it would not relinquish.

Christian Fagnant got things started in the second with a deep drive to right-center field that cleared the fence for a solo home run -- his second of the season -- and tied the game 2-2.
*
Tylon Crump Jr. was hit by a pitch and then forced at second by a
Jack Boyle grounder. Boyle stole second.
Jack Sampedro lined an RBI single to left field for a 3-2 Amherst lead. McDermott followed with a drive into the right-center field gap that scored Sampedro and went for an RBI double.
Ryan McIntyre then slipped a seeing-eye single through the left side to put runners on the corners. McIntyre stole second and
Luke Padian came through by lofting a sacrifice fly to center on an 0-2 pitch. Dove followed with a line drive RBI-single to right for a 6-2 lead.
* The Mammoths were able to add on two key insurance runs in the fifth when Boyle and Sampdero worked two-out walks and McDermott lined a two-run double to right for an 8-3 lead.
* Elms batted back, scoring once in the sixth and twice in the eighth to cut its deficit to 8-6, but Padian and Dove stroked back-to-back doubles with two outs in the eighth for a 9-6 lead.

Tristan Kim got the start and the win for the Mammoths, going three innings and allowing one earned run.
Ian Donahue had a three-inning relief stint in the middle of the game and did not allow an earned run.
Christian Pedro,
Kila Kaniho, and
Alan Dai finished up. Dai earned his first save with two strikeouts in the ninth.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* McDermott was 3 for 5 with three doubles and three RBIs in the win. Dove was 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Sampedro was 1 for 2 with two walks and three runs scored. Padian hit 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs and now has a team-leading 39 for the season.
