Mammoths stay hot with 12-6 win over M.I.T.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Tyler McCord and Ryan McIntyre had three hits each Wednesday and Caden McClure through six strong innings as the Amherst College baseball team defeated M.I.T., 12-6.

The Mammoths improved to 18-10-1. MIT fell to 12-17. Amherst is back in action Friday with a NESCAC West showdown on Memorial Field against Middlebury at 4 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths parlayed 12 hits, 7 hit batsmen, and 9 walks from MIT pitchers into 12 runs. The Mammoths scored four runs in the top of the first with only one hit, and that hit didn't factor into the scoring. After the Engineers tied it up with four of their own in the bottom half of the first to tie the game, Amherst responded with three runs in the top of the second to take a 7-4 lead and never looked back.

* Jack McDermott and McIntyre got things started in the second with back-to-back singles. Luke Padian was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jack Dove then hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored McDermott for a 5-4 lead. After Jackson Reydel walked to re-load the bases, McCord ripped an RB single to left that scored McIntyre. A wild pitch brought home Padian for the 7-4 lead. 

* Amherst added a single run in the third when McDermott singled and stole second with one out. McIntyre singled him to third and then stole second before Padian's grounder brought home McIntyre. 

* The Mammoths added three runs in the fifth on one hit. McCord drew a with the bases loaded to force in a run, and Ben Smith and Jack Boyle were hit by pitches to force in runs that made it 11-4 visitors. 

* Up 11-6 in the eighth, Jack Sampedro hit a solo home run to account for the final score, his second of the season. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

* After a rough four-run first inning, McClure threw a solid outing, allowing only three hits and no runs over the next five innings. He picked up his first win, giving up eight hits over six innings while walking one and striking out three. 

* McCord was 3 for 5 with three RBIs. McIntyre was 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Padian was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
