4-run 9th inning lifts Mammoths past Trinity, 5-3

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Jack Sampedro's three-run, bases-clearing double with one out in the top of the ninth inning Wednesday rallied the Amherst College baseball team to a 5-3 non-conference road win over Trinity College.

The Mammoths improved to 15-8-1 on the season and will play at Wesleyan University Friday at 4 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths trailed 3-1 entering the ninth inning. With one out, Jackson Reydel worked a walk. Ben Smith singled him to second and Michael Perales ran for Smith. Jack Boyle drew a walk that loaded the bases. Sampedro followed with a double that plated all three runners and gave Amherst its first lead of the game at 4-3. With two outs, Ryan McIntyre lashed an RBI-single that scored Sampedro with an important insurance run.

* Christian Pedro, who hurled three shutout innings of relief to earn the win, struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth, working around a walk and a single to do so. 

* Amherst trailed 3-0 when it scored its first run of the game in the top of the fifth. Reydel doubled, Smith singled and Boyle doubled home Redel to pull within two at 3-1. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Mammoths had 11 hits in the victory. Sampedro was 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and a run scored. Boyle was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Reydel was 1 for 3 with two runs scored. Smith was 2 for 4 and Luke Padian was 3 for 5. 

* Caden McClure got the start for the Mammoths and went the first four, allowing three runs, only two earned. Ian Donahue threw two innings, allowing no runs on one hits while walking two. Pedro threw the final three frames, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out three and improving to 1-2 on the season.
