Mammoths succumb to Wesleyan rally, 8-7

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Amherst College baseball team fell one-run short Friday afternoon, losing a NESCAC West Division showdown with Wesleyan on the road, 8-7. 

With the loss, Amherst is now 15-9-1 overall and 4-3 in NESCAC West play while the Cardinals improved to 11-13 overall, but also 4-3 in conference play. The two teams will play a doubleheader in Amherst Saturday with the opener beginning at 1 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst built a 4-1 lead through five innings Friday. The Mammoths took the lead with a single run in the top of the first. Jack Sampedro and Jack Sampedro singled to start off the game. Ryan McIntyre hit into a double play, but Sampedro scored to give Amherst an early lead. 

* The Mammoths broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to take the 4-1 lead. Jack Dove led off with a double to right and Jackson Reydel singled him to third. Tyler McCord hit a grounder in the hole that the Cardinal shortstop got to but could not make a play, allowing Dove to score. After a sacrifice by Christian Fagnant, back-to-back walks to Jack Boyle and Sampedro forced in another run, giving Amherst a 3-1 lead. 

* In the Amherst fifth, Ryan McIntyre singled, stole second, and with two outs, came on on Reydel's RBI-double.

* Wesleyan countered with four runs in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. Amherst responded with a single run in the top of the seventh to tie the game. McIntyre singled to center and raced to second on an error. Luke Padian singled him home with an RBI single that tied the game, 6-6. 

* Wesleyan scored twice in the 7th to take a 7-5 lead. In the top of the ninth, Amherst attempted to rally as consecutive singles by McDermott, McIntyre, and Padian (RBI) made it an 8-6 game. Dove dropped down a safety squeeze to score another run which made it a one-run game with a runner on second and one out, but the next two batters were retired to end the game.

BY THE NUMBERS:

*  Amherst outhit Wesleyan, 15-10. McDermott, McIntyre, and Padian each went 3 for 5, with McIntyre scoring three runs and Padian driving in two. 

* First-year Tristan Kim (4-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season.
