Red-hot Mammoths win 15-5 slugfest over Hamilton

CLINTON, NY - Christian Fagnant and Tyler McCord each had three hits Sunday to pace a 17-hit attack for the Amherst College baseball team, which outslugged Hamilton 15-5 at the Loop Road Complex.

The Mammoths' fourth straight win propelled them into first place in the NESCAC West Division with a 4-2 NESCAC West record. They are 14-8-1 overall. Hamilton fell to 5-4 in the West, 14-11 overall.

Next up for Amherst is an away game Wednesday at Trinity College. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst built an 11-1 lead after six innings Sunday, scoring once in the first, once in the second, twice in the fourth, once in the fifth, and finally six runs in the sixth to blow the game open.

* In the first, Jack Sampedro led off the game with a single and one out later took third on a double by Ryan McIntyre. Luke Padian then scored Sampedro with a groundout to second base.

* In the Mammoths second, McCord crushed a one-out triple to right-center field and scored when Fagnant followed with an RBI-single to right center.

* Leading 2-0 entering the fourth, Amherst tacked on two more for a 4-0 lead. Jackson Reydel led off with a single and Jack Dove worked a walk. With two outs, Jack Boyle drew a walk to load the bases and Sampedro came through with a two-run single to left field.

* The Amherst sixth was highlighted by three Hamilton errors, an RBI-single off the bat of Padian, an RBI-single by McCord, and a two-run triple from Fagnant.

* In the meantime, Naaveen Narayanan held Hamilton off the scoreboard through four frames by stranding seven runners. He did not allow a hit over those first four innings, but he did walk eight while striking out one. He wiggled out of bases-loaded jams in both the second and third. In the second, he induced a bases-loaded, two-out grounder to second to quell the threat and in the third - after walking two and hitting another - he fanned a batter with the bases loaded and two outs to escape.

* Five Amherst relievers pitched one inning each. Tyson Lune allowed three hits and one run but earned his third win of the season. E.J. Nevills and Sampedro threw scoreless innings.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* McCord was 3 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Fagnant was 3 for 5 with 4 RBIs. Sampedro was 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs and Padian was 2 for 6 with 3 RBIs.
