Mary Kate McGranahan tops elite field in 5k as Mammoths compete at Smith, Connecticut College

Senior Mary Kate McGranahan of the Amherst College women's track and field team won the 5000m run at the Silfen Invitational at Connecticut College, while others competed at the Carla Coffey Inviational at Smith College on a busy Friday for the Mammoths.

Through the first 3 of 20 events at Smith, the Mammoths sit in third place out of nine teams that competed on Friday with 25.2 points as Tufts leads with 34.4 points.

The Mammoths, ranked third in the Mideast Region in the latest USTFCCCA rating index, will be back in action at Smith tomorrow (Saturday, April 15) with events beginning at 9 a.m.

SILFEN INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS:

* Competing the 5000m for the first time this outdoor season, McGranahan paced the field in the elite heat to finish in 17:31.42, a time that ranks among the top 25 nationally in Division III so far this season.

* First-year Allison Lounsbury placed fifth in her first collegiate 10,000m race, posting a time of 37:32.54 that ranks in the top 10 in New England so far this season. Sophomore Claire Callon placed ninth in 38:49.56, also making her collegiate 10k debut.

COFFEY INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS:

* First-year Morgan Rome finished second in the javelin with a throw of 35.52m. Junior Carolina Andrade was just behind with a mark of 35.22m to place third. Senior Annelise Romero finished sixth with a personal-best throw of 31.63m.

* Junior Mia Bawendi cleared 3.40m to tie for second place in the pole vault.

* Junior Bethany Martin finished seventh in the hammer with a throw of 36.59m and classmate Deb Thayer was just behind with a mark of 36.42m that was good for eighth place.

* Competing in her first collegiate heptathlon, sophomore Anaya Thomas sits in fifth place with 2,219 points through four of seven events. The remainder of the events will be contested tomorrow.
