#12 Amherst rolls to 15-8 win over Bates

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Junior attack Jake Bennett scored four goals and added three assists to power the offense as the Amherst College men's lacrosse team earned a 15-8 win over Bates College in NESCAC action on Friday at the Mustang Classic hosted by Stevenson University at Mustang Stadium.

The Mammoths, ranked 12th in the nation in the latest USILA Division III poll, improved to 2-1 this season with all the action thus far coming in conference play. The Bobcats fell to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the NESCAC.

The Mammoths are back in action tomorrow (Saturday, March 18) at 11 a.m., facing 13th-ranked York at Stevenson.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Senior midfielder Matt Adams got the scoring started just 23 seconds into the game, followed later in the period by tallies from first-year Bob Gross and the senior Thomas Ehret.

* The two sides traded goals in the final minute of the first quarter as Malcolm Klingbeil put the Bobcats on the board but was answered 16 seconds later by senior Tanyr Krummenacher.

* Bennett scored a pair in the second quarter before sophomore Ben Bruno added a goal to give the Mammoths a 7-3 halftime lead.

* Bennett and Krummenacher scored less than a minute apart in the third quarter to put the Mammoths up, 9-4.

* A stretch of four unanswered Amherst goals in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach, capped by the first collegiate goal for first-year Kai Lockton in his collegiate debut.



BY THE NUMBERS:

* Krummenacher scored three goals and added two assists, while also scooping up a game-high 10 ground balls and causing two turnovers.

* The Mammoths held a 55-36 advantage in shots and a 41-39 edge in ground balls.

* Sophomore Mitch Likins made 11 saves while allowing only 6 goals to earn the win.

* The Mammoths won 15 of 27 face-offs, including 9 of 13 wins at the X for sophomore Mason Chandler.
