Big 4th Quarter leads #12 Mammoths by #13 York, 19-16

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Matt Adams and Tanyr Krummenacher each scored 4 goals and added 2 assists Saturday as the #12-ranked Amherst College men's lacrosse team made it two wins in two days at the Mustang Classic by edging #13 York College by a 19-16 score.

Amherst improved to 3-1 overall with the victory while York slipped to 2-4 on the season. Next up for the Mammoths is Springfield College as the Pride travel to Amherst for a 6 p.m. game Wednesday. That game is slated to be played at Gooding Field. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths jumped out an early 5-1 lead behind goals from Krummenacher (2), Adams, Alex Giocobbe and Bob Gross. That was short-lived, however, as York responded with four consecutive goals to tie the score at five. That would set the story of the game as Amherst would never trail but also never lead by more than three again until late in the fourth quarter. 

* Goals by Bayard DeMallie and Jake Bennett in the final 2:29 of the second stanza broke a 5-5 tie and allowed Amherst to in halftime up to 7-5, but York came out of the break and scored the first twogoals of the third quarter to tie things up again 7-7. The Mammoths reponded with a goal from Krummenacher, Brodie Rayment, and Matt Sheinberg to build a 10-7 lead with 7:59 remaining in the third. Krummenacher would score again with 43 seconds left tin the third for a 13-11 Amherst lead, but York would battle back ti to the game at 13-13 and then 14-14 early in the fourth. 

* The backbreaking goal may have been provided by Amherst face-off specialist Nicholas Kopp, who scored his first goal of the season off a face-off win with 13:19 left in the game for a 15-14 Amherst lead. With 10:50 left, Adams would score a man-up goal off an assist from Bennett for a two-goal lead, and that was followed by Giacobb's second goal of the game that made it 17-14. After York answered to make it 17-15, Bob Gross scored his second goal off a pass from Lawson Laverty with 4:46 to go to make it 18-15. 

BY THE NUMBERS: 

* Amherst outshot York, 43-40 in the contest. The Mammoths picked up 38 groundballs to York's 33, but York held a 22-17 edge in face-offs. 

* Mitch Likins made nine saves in the Amherst victory. 

* Laverty led Amherst with three caused turnovers while Ethan Opdahl had two. Kopp and Krummenacher each had six groundballs to pace the Mammoths.
