WATERVILLE, Me. -- Despite a furious third-period rally Saturday, the Amherst College women's hockey team saw it program-record 18-game win streak end in a 5-4 loss to the Mules.
The Mammoths are now 19-2-0 overall and 12-2-0 in NESCAC play. Colby improved to 12-6-0, 6-6-0 in the conference. Amherst will have nine days off before traveling to play at Suffolk University Monday, Feb. 13. Puck drop is 6 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst trailed 3-0 after one period and 5-1 after two. The five goals were the most allowed by the team this season.
* A goal by first-year
Maeve Reynolds at the 7:55 mark of the second period made it a 3-1 game, but the Mules responded with two of their own before the frame concluded.
* The Mammoths' comeback began in earnest at the 5:27 mark of the final period when senior
Avery Flynn scored off helpers from
Rylee Glennon and Anna Bater. Less than five minutes later it was 5-3 when senior
Kate Pohl scored off assists from Glennon and
Kelsey Stewart. With 7:23 remaining in the game, Mammoths senior
Leslie Schwartz made it 5-4 when she scored with assists from Glennon and
Alyssa Xu.
* The Mammoths rally was slowed by a couple of penalties, but they managed to kill off those situations still down one goal. With the goalie pulled in the final minute,
Mary Thompson got off a shot, but Colby goaltender Paige Bolyard was there for the save. A Schwartz shot in the final seconds was blocked by a defender.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst outshot the Mules, 26-25, in the game. Mammoth goaltender
Natalie Stott made 20 saves. Bolyard finished with 22.
* All four penalties were called in the third period. Amherst went 2 for 2 on the power play in the game.
* The Mammoths wo the face-off battle, 30-28. Baxter won 15 of the 19 face-offs she took Saturday.
* Glennon had 3 assists in the loss, all coming in the third period.
