BOSTON, Mass. -- The #4 Amherst College women's hockey team got two goals from
Rylee Glennon Monday night to brush past Suffolk University at its Porrazzo Rink, 2-0.
The Mammoths improved to 20-2-0 on the season. They are home vs. rival Williams Friday night at 7 p.m. The Rams fell to 15-7-2 overall.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The first period was fairly even, with the Mammoths forecheck doing a great job in the middle of the period keeping the puck in the Suffolk zone but unable to convert any opportunities. With 10 minutes to go, Suffolk cleared a 2-on-1 counter attack, but Amherst goaltender
Natalie Stott made the play of the period by sliding to her right and making a pad save on a goal bid by Sam Molind.
* Near the end of the frame, Mammoth
Avery Flynn was called for tripping, but the Amherst penalty kill was able to quell the threat by the Rams and go into the locker room knotted in a scoreless tie Each team had 8 shots in the stanza. Stott finished with 8 saves as did Rams' goalie Lily O'Neil.
* Amherst had the better of play in the second period, especially after the Mammoths killed off another power-play chance for its hosts early in the period. Stott made another key save in that penalty kill, stuffing an opportunity from Sammy Lassman to keep the game scoreless. Amherst got on the board on its own power-play opportunity mid-way through the frame.
Leslie Schwartz received a pass from
Anna Baxter in the lower right face-off circle in te Rams' zone and fired a quick shot which O'Neil stopped with her pad. The rebound caromed off to the left where Mammoth winger Glennon stood alone, and she quickly fired a s hot into the wide open left side of the net
* In the closing minutes of the period Amherst had another power-play opportunity, but this one did not yield a goal, although
Alyssa Xu's rebound shot from the doorstep just slid wide right of the far post.
* Amherst had several chances to take a two-goal lead in the final frame, but the Suffolk defenders were able to get a body or stick on a slew of shots and keep them away from O'Neil. With O'Neil off the ice in the closing seconds, Glennon made a great play when she stole the puck at the Suffolk Blue line, controlled it by kicking it to her stick with her skate, and tapping it in the empty net for a 2-0 lead with 31 seconds left on the clock.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths had a 13 to 7 edge in shots over the final period, and finished with a 32-21 advantage over 60 minutes.
* Stott made 21 saves in positing her 8th shutout of the season.
* Amherst won 31 of the 51 face-offs in the contest.
Jayna Park won 8 of 12 drawn while
Maeve Reynolds won 12 of 19 taken.
* The Mammoths killed off both Suffolk power-plays in the game, while going 1 for 5.
