WATERVILLE, Me. -- Sophomore
Anna Baxter scored 62 seconds into overtime Friday night, lifting the #3-ranked Amherst College women's ice hockey team to a 3-2 over conference rival Colby's Jack Kelley Rink at the O'Neil | O'Donnell Forum.
The win was Amherst's 18th straight win and improved its record to 19-1-0 overall and 12-1-0 in conference play. The Mules fell to 11-6-0 overall, 5-6-0 in the NESCAC. The two teams face-off once again Saturday in Waterville. Puck drop is 3 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Colby scored twice in the third period - the second time with 37 seconds remaining in the ame -- to tie Amherst and send the game into a 3-on-3, 5-minute overtime period.
* Nearly one minute ino the extra session the Mammoth trio of Baxter,
Kate Pohl and
Avery Flynn made the Colby comeback irrelevant. Pohl speed-skated ito the Mules' zone, then stopped on a dime at the top of the left-face-off circle, sliding a back pass to an onrushing Flynn, who cruised down to the lower left of the circle before she fired a pinpoint cross-ice pass to Baxter, stationed unattended at the far right post of the Colby goal. Baxter calmly one-time that Flynn pass into the top right corner of the net for the game-winner, her 5th goal of the season, with 1:02 gone.
* In the first period, the Mules and Mammoths were in an even matchup with 19 shots by Colby and 16shots by Amherst. However, Amherst was able to pull ahead with a goal in the eighth minute. First-years
Gretchen Dann and
Maeve Reynolds teamed up on the score, with Dann scoring her third goal of the season off a pass from Reynolds for the 1-0 lead.
* It was still 1-0 in the final stanza when Amherst was given a power-play opportunity. It took them only 21 seconds to take advantage as Flynn and Glennon set up sophomore
Alyssa Xu's 6th goal of the season with 7:57 gone in the period for a 2-0 Mammoths' lead.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst was outshot in a game for the first time this season as Colby mustered 43 shots to the Mammoths' 27.
* Mammoth goaltender
Natalie Stott made a season-high 41 saves in the victory.
* Each team was assessed one penalty in the game both came in the final period and both resulted in power-play goals.
* Amherst won 47 face-offs and lost on 27.
Jayna Park won 13 and lost only 4 in the victory.
