SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- First-year
Johnny McCain drained a three-pointer with nine seconds left Thursday night as the Amherst College men's basketball team rallied from 14 points down over the final 11 minutes to stun Springfield College, 66-65, in the Pride's Blake Arena.
Amherst never led until McCain's trey. The Mammoths improved to 4-2 on the season and will host Yeshiva University Sunday at 1 p.m. in LeFrak Gymnasium. Springfield fell to 2-3 on the year.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Springfield's Josh Hartley hit a shirt jumper with 11:44 remaining in the game to give the home team a 54-40 lead.
* Three straight possessions in which the Mammoths got to the foul line helped them cut the lead to nine. First-year guard
Marc Garraud then sank a short jumper in the paint to make it a 54-47 game with 9:15 remaining. Garraud tied for the team-lead in points on the night with 14.
* Springfield pushed its lead back to 11 before a lay-up from
Dan Schlakman and a pair of Garraud free throws made it with 6:30 left.
* Each team had missed opportunities to score over the next 1:45, and that allowed the Mammoths to shave their deficit to five points when
Mohammed Alausa hit a 12-foot jumper in the paint with 4:45 left. Schlakman then came up with a big steal and was fouled in transition, hitting both freebies to make it 59-56 with 4:13 left. After a Pride bucket, Alausa knocked down a three off the left elbow to make it 61-59.
* Following a missed three by Springfield, Garraud drove the lane and was fouled, sinking both free throws to tie the game 61-all with 2:13 remaining.
* The Pride held on, scoring three from the foul line to lead by three with 42 seconds left. An Alausa jumper in the paint cut the defciti to one with 28 seconds remaining.
* Springfield got the line its next possession and hit 1 of 2 freebies for a 65-63 lead with 21 seconds to go.
*After a timeout, the Mammoths got down the ball quickly and a quick kick out helped the ball find its way around the perimeter to McCain, who took a three-pointer from the top of the key and hit nothing but the bottom of the net for a 66-65 lead -- the Mammoths' first -- with only nine seconds left.
* Springfield brought the ball up the floor and got a decent look at a three from the top of the key, but it was off target and Amherst had the win.
