AMHERST, Mass. --
Bobby Sommers and
Will Scherer scored 18 points each Sunday afternoon, leading the Amherst College men's basketball team to a 92-80 victory over Yeshiva University in LeFrak Gymnasium.
In all, six different Mammoths scored in double figures as they shot a season-best 53.2 percent from the floor and 55 percent from beyond the arc while outrebounding the visitors, 45-21.
The Mammoths improved to 5-2 overall. They will host Albertus Magnus Tuesday at 7 p.m. back in LeFrak. The Maccabees slipped to 6-4 overall.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst led early 4-0 on baskets from
Chris Hammond and
C.J. Mitchell in the paint. After a three-pointer from Yeshiva's Adi Markovich, the Mammoths went on a 12-0 run to build a 16-3 lead.
* A pair of free throws from Scherer and Sommers made it 8-3. Following a defensive rebound from Hammond, Sommer knocked down a three-ball for an 11-3 lead.
Mohammed Alausa then came up with a block on the defensive end, grabbing the rebound as well. Scherer made that important when he grabbed an offensive board off an Alausa miss and scored the putback for a 10-point lead. After another Alausa defensive board, Mitchell drained a trey for a 16-3 lead with 15:14 remaining in the first half.
* Yeshiva battled back to within a point at 20-19, but the Mammoths used te three-pointer to keep the Maccabees at bay.
Marc Garraud followed an Alausa steal with a three for a 23-19 lead. With 7:36 remaining in the half, Scherer came up with a defensive rebound, raced down to secure an offensive rebound and then assisted on a three-pointer from Alausa which gave Amherst a 27-19 advantage.
* With 5:32 to go, Hammond knocked down another trey for the Mammoths, putting them up by double figures once again at 32-21. The Mammoths went into the locker room at the half up 10 at 45-35,
* A 10-2 run around the mid-way point put the Mammoths up by 20, their largest lead of the game. A lay-up from
Dan Schlakman got the run started, and Mitchell knocked down another three-ball with 8:49 remaining in the game for a 70-55 lead. After a Scherer block, Alausa scored a fastbreak lay-up. Mitchell capped the run with another trey to make it 75-55 with 7:45 to go.
* At that point Yeshiva found some spark, and outscored the Mammoths 21-5 over the next 5:46 to make it 80-76 Amherst with 1:59 left. It was Sommers who scored a key lay-in off a drive through the paint to give the Mammoths a six-point lead. Amherst would then hit six straight free throws to widen the lead to nine before dunks from Scherer and Alausa in the final 30 seconds punctuated the victory.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst shot 63 percent (17 of 27) from the floor over the final 20 minutes and finished the game 11 of 20 (55 percent) from beyond the arc.
*Scherer finished with a double-double, adding 14 rebounds to his 18-point night. Alausa finished with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals. Mitchell added 13 points, going 3 for 3 from beyond the arc. Hammond had 10 points and Garraud netted 11 in the victory, adding three assists.
* Zevi Samet scored 22 of his game-high 26 points in the second half for Yeshiva.
