Mammoths suffer 74-65 defeat at hands of Anchormen

AMHERST, Mass. -- Deyshawn Tengbeh led all scorers with 26 points Tuesday night as Rhode Island College came into LeFrak Gymnasium and dropped a 74-65 decision on the Amherst College men's basketball team.

The Mammoths are now 3-2 on the season while RIC improved to 6-2. Amherst is at Springfield College Thursday night for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst found itself down by 10 mid-way through the first half Tuesday, trailing 21-11 before Bobby Sommers ignited a 10-0 run that saw the Mammoths tie the game. Sommers drove to the hoop off the right edge for a lay-in, then came up with a steal at the other end, drove in for a dunk that was blocked only to watch as teammate Noah Helmke was there to collect the rebound and drain a short jumper from the paint. Just a couple of minutes later, Helmke knocked down a trey attempt from the top of the key that brought the home squad within three points at 21-18.

* That Helmke three was part of a turnaround for the Mammoths, who over the first half hit 1 of their first 7 trey attempts before hitting on 7 of their final 10 ver the first 20 minutes.

* With 6:58 left in the half, Chris Hammond got into the act, draining a three-ball from the right corner to tie the game at 21-21. RIC responded with a 5-0 run to regain a lead. C.J. Mitchell then drained a three to bring Amherst back within two. After another Mitchell bucket, Helmke drained another three from the top of they key to give Amherst its first lead at 29-28 with 3:22 remaining in the half.

* The lead would go back-and-froth over te final three minutes, with the Mammoths offense nearly entirely relying on the three. Hammond hit one for  32-30 lead, and then another to tie the game at 35-all. Marc Garraud hit the final one of the half for Amherst, giving the Mammoths a brief 38-37 lead, but it would be the Anchormen who scored the final five points of the stanza and went into the locker room at halftime up 42-38.

* The Mammoths shot 48.4 percent (15 of 31) from the floor over the first 20 minutes, and a sizzling 47.1 (8 of 17) from beyond the arc. RIC countered with 45.7 percent shooting (16 of 35).

* RIC went up by six points on a Tengbeh lay-up eight seconds into the second half, and the Mammoths, despite cutting the lead to 2 and then 1 at different points in the half, could never quite gain the lead back. There was nearly a four-minute span mid-way through the half which the Anchormen's one-point lead hung in the balance, but the Mammoths did not convert several chances.

* A Mohammed Alausa lay-up with 8:03 remaining cut the Mammoths deficit to one again. Kalu Uga answered with a three-pointer for RIC. Helmke then drove the baseline not once, but twice to keep the Mammoth within three points. With 3:47 left, Hammond knocked down a three-ball to bring the Mammoths within two at 60-58. But Uga grabbed a key offensive rebound and was fouled, hitting two freebies to put RIC back up by four and RIC pulled away over the final 120 seconds for the nine-point win.
